Advanced Engineer
Black Desert Resort, located in the stunning red rock landscape of Southern Utah, is a world-class luxury destination offering refined accommodations, championship golf, elevated dining, and premium amenities. The resort's Engineering Department plays a vital role in ensuring the safety, functionality, and aesthetic excellence of all guest and operational areas, maintaining the highest standards of quality, reliability, and energy efficiency.
The Advanced Engineer is a senior-level technician and working leader responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing the resort's most complex building systems, including HVAC, fire life safety, Building Management Systems (BMS), and electrical infrastructure. This role provides technical expertise, leadership, and mentorship to the Engineering team, ensuring continuous operations and upholding the resort's high standards for safety, efficiency, and guest satisfaction. The Advanced Engineer also assists with large-scale projects, vendor coordination, and serves as the department lead when the Chief Engineer is unavailable.

Shift & Schedule Availability: Year-Round / Full-Time
Pay Rate: $27 – $30/hr. This is the pay range we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Individual compensation decisions are based on a variety of factors.

Responsibilities
- Perform and lead advanced maintenance and repair work involving mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and structural systems.
- Independently diagnose and resolve complex issues related to HVAC systems, refrigeration units, chillers, boilers, and building automation controls.
- Conduct routine testing, inspections, and calibration of critical systems including fire alarms, sprinklers, smoke detectors, and emergency lighting.
- Maintain and adjust building performance using the resort's BMS (e.g., Honeywell, Trane, or Johnson Controls) to optimize comfort and efficiency.
- Oversee contractors and vendors, ensuring projects and repairs meet resort and regulatory standards.
- Manage preventive maintenance programs and assign tasks to Entry and Intermediate Engineers as appropriate.
- Lead capital improvement efforts, installations, and upgrades involving resort systems and infrastructure.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and resort safety standards, including proper use of PPE, lockout/tagout, and hazard communication procedures.
- Train and mentor junior team members in maintenance procedures, troubleshooting, and safety protocols.
- Document all maintenance activities, inspections, and incidents in the resort's work order system (e.g., Nuvola).
- Serve as acting department lead during assigned shifts or in the Chief Engineer's absence.
- Foster a positive team culture built on accountability, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience in commercial, resort, or hotel facilities engineering.
- Strong technical expertise in mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and HVAC/R systems.
- Proficiency in Building Management Systems (BMS) and related diagnostic software.
- Knowledge of fire/life safety codes, building codes, and preventive maintenance standards.
- Ability to lead small teams and manage vendor relationships effectively.
- Certifications strongly preferred:
- EPA Universal Refrigerant Handling
- Certified Pool Operator (CPO)
- OSHA 30-hour General Industry Safety Certification
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, wiring diagrams, and mechanical schematics.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to remain calm and decisive during emergencies and operational interruptions.
