General Summary
The Surgical Services Educator is a professional Registered Nurse who oversees performance improvement initiatives and accepts responsibility for the education of the staff and students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Considers the growth and development of patients and provides education to all positions in the OR, Endoscopy, Pre-Op, PACU, Pain Management, ASU, and Sterile Processing departments working in conjunction with all appropriate managers to improve and ensure the processes of orientation are adhered to.
- Ensures areas of responsibility meet or exceed all state, federal, Joint Commission and specialty licensing/accreditation regulations and standards.
- Develops an individualized orientation lifecycle of the education plan and oversees its progress throughout the education process.
- Identifies areas that need improvement in the orientation process and develops an action plan to enhance those identified areas based off of the electronic clinical assessment examination tool.
- Responsible for maintaining and updating any equipment or process changes as they arise with an evidence based practice update or equipment update with the associated vendor.
- Responsible for coordination and orientation of student rotations and shadowing in conjunction with the instructors and AHEC to ensure they have a comprehensive clinical process.
- Ensures compliance with annual competencies and certification/licensure requirements to meet all identified educational needs per department.
- Develops quality improvement initiatives based on management identified areas of need and provides, develops and reports education based on those areas.
- Assists with data and report development for multi-disciplinary identified areas of improvement for surgeons and directors as needed utilizing our EMR reporting system.
- Takes on the clinical roles during shortages or critical staffing levels to ensure skills are up to date in order to be an effective educator supported by the departmental governing bodies.
- Fosters an atmosphere of teamwork and accountability by demonstrating a thorough understanding of the dynamics of healthcare, adapting to change in a positive and professional manner in an attempt to support the organization mission.
Education
Graduate from an accredited Baccalaureate in nursing program required. A Master of Science in nursing is preferred.
Work Experience
Five years of acute care nursing experience in addition to two years of peri-operative nursing experience required.
Certification/License
- Current RN license in the State of Missouri or Compact State required;
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) required;
- American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required;
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) required;
- CNOR certification preferred.
Mental/Physical Requirements
Considerable mental concentration required. Lifting up to 35 lbs., turning activities and nearly constant walking required. Standing, turning, carrying, pushing, pulling, stooping, crouching, twisting, and reaching.
Working Conditions
Frequent exposure to infectious disease and hostile persons at times. Frequent exposure to communicable disease via blood and other body fluids. Minimal radiation and laser exposure. Minimal physical discomfort.
