Carnegie Mellon University's department of Mechanical Engineering is searching for a Research Assistant to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in an interesting and challenging work environment. You will contribute to research focused on ensuring the safety and reliability of robotic systems. In this role, you will design and implement a safety monitoring system for robotic platforms, utilizing advanced algorithmic tools to validate and enhance the performance of learned robotic policies and such other tasks that are assigned to you.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement algorithmic solutions for the safety monitoring of learned robotic policies.
  • Create and maintain interfaces to characterize desired behaviors during the learning process.
  • Design and implement interfaces for detecting undesired behaviors during the robot's deployment.
  • Design and execute experiments to validate the effectiveness of the developed safety monitoring approach.
  • Collaborate with team members on the technical implementation and experimental validation of the monitoring tools.
  • Document research, development, and experimental results through written reports and presentations.

Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering, Computer Science or Applied Mathematics preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of probability and statistics, linear algebra, and dynamical systems.
  • Programming expertise in Python or Julia.
  • A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
