This position is for a PLC-focused Control Systems Engineer supporting Machinery Control Systems (MCS) for the USS ARLEIGH BURKE class of destroyers for the U.S. Navy. The primary responsibilities include hands-on work with Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) hardware and software, providing full life-cycle support across fielded systems and Land Based Engineering Sites (LBES). The selected candidate will work directly with ruggedized industrial-grade PLC systems and supporting hardware on a daily basis—participating in integration, troubleshooting, upgrades, and system-level design for current and future MCS variants.

Principal duties/responsibilities include:

  • Lifecycle support of PLC-based supervisory machinery control systems, including:
    • Daily interaction with and troubleshooting of PLC hardware and associated field devices
    • PLC programming, modification, and validation aligned with evolving system requirements
    • Supporting the design and integration of PLC equipment in shipboard and industrial control environments
    • Providing technical insight and feedback on future PLC-based system architectures
    • Reviewing system documentation, logic diagrams, and control narratives for accuracy and completeness
    • Developing and executing test plans and procedures for PLC-controlled systems
    • Supporting both shipboard and LBES PLC software and hardware installation efforts
    • Assisting with system-level software requirements definition and refinement for PLC-controlled applications

Required qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Computer Engineering is required; other degrees will be considered based on the candidate's industry experience
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in electrical or computer engineering for control systems in an industrial or shipboard environment
  • Minimum of 1 year hands-on experience with PLC systems, including programming and diagnostics
  • Must be a US Citizen and currently hold or be eligible to obtain a U.S. government security clearance
  • Hands-on experience with Siemens (S7-1500, TIA Portal, etc.), Allen Bradley (ControlLogix, RSLogix 5000), and/or Rockwell PLC platforms
  • Strong understanding of PLC logic, control strategies, and ladder/structured text programming
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting electrical schematics and control system drawings
  • Experienced in using test and diagnostic tools specific to industrial and PLC-based systems

Preferred skills:

  • Experience programming with multiple IEC 61131-3 languages (e.g., ladder logic, structured text)
  • Familiarity with the IEC 61131-3 standard for PLC programming
  • Experience with SCADA or HMI development
  • Background in hardware upgrades and modernization of legacy embedded PLC systems
  • Familiarity with ISO/IEC/IEEE control system standards
  • Basic knowledge of network communications as applied to control systems (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, etc.)
  • Strong technical writing and documentation skills
  • Effective communicator with both engineering teams and non-technical stakeholders

Additional information:

  • Travel required up to 20%
  • Must be available to support onsite work at LBES approximately 50% of the time
