Engineer 1

GAI Consultants, Inc. is seeking an Engineer 1 to work with the Power Generation Business Sector on Power Generation and Infrastructure projects and when needed other regional client projects. The successful candidate will enjoy working in a team-oriented environment that will utilize their college education and past work experience to develop professionally into a well-rounded professional with the ability to grow in today's environment. The candidate will be based out of one of GAI's Pittsburgh area offices, Canton, OH office, Charleston, WV office or Richmond, VA office.

The successful candidate will perform geotechnical design tasks and field work under the supervision of a licensed professional engineer and/or professional geologist. Essential duties include:

  • Perform geotechnical engineering assignments involving investigations and designs for a variety of facilities including, but not limited to: foundations for transmission lines, buildings, bridges, retaining walls and other structures; designs for natural gas pipelines and compressor stations; and design of residual waste landfills and impoundments.
  • Prepare geotechnical engineering designs involving rock/soil slope stability, cut slope and fill embankment design, landslide stabilization, geotechnical field instrumentation, soil reinforcement and ground improvement techniques, sheet pile/retaining walls, and shallow and deep foundations.
  • Develop subsurface investigations, monitoring programs, and coordinate geologic site characterization for a variety of facilities mentioned above.
  • Installations of geotechnical field instrumentation and selection of samples for laboratory testing.
  • Prepare proposals, budgets, schedules, calculations, specifications and reports.
  • Geotechnical Investigation and Construction Support Services including test boring monitoring and logging, site reconnaissance, foundation and retaining structure construction monitoring and inspection.
  • Perform site inspections at various power facilities and associated sites.
  • Prepare boring logs and geologic cross sections.
  • Travel can be expected in the form of fieldwork, which can be daily local travel or weekly out-of-town travel primarily in the mid-west and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States.
  • Be able to complete with assistance or willing to learn basic civil site design tasks including site grading plans, erosion and sediment control plans, stormwater management plans, drainage plans, utility design and relocation, permit applications, construction drawings, specifications, and quality control plans, construction cost estimates.

Physical requirements include the ability to traverse steep terrain and carry up to 50 lbs.

General characteristics include applying broad knowledge of principles and practices in a specific practice area, independently evaluating, selecting, and adapting standard techniques, procedures, and criteria, acquiring general knowledge of principles and practices of related fields, and ability to function on multidisciplinary teams.

Minimum years of experience required: 4+ years.

Education required: B.S. or M.S. Engineering.

Certification/Licensure required: Professional Engineer (P.E.) License.

Technical responsibilities include occasionally designing portions of a project, system, component, or process, preparing plans, specifications, and other project documents, designing and conducting analyses and interpreting test data.

Project and task management includes occasionally assigning tasks to other technical and non-technical staff, occasionally planning and coordinating detailed aspects of the engineering work, preparing scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignments, assisting with proposals to provide professional services or obtain funding for engineering projects or projects.

Management responsibility includes receiving general direction on key objectives, receiving guidance on unconventional/complex problems, direction on modified techniques, and new approaches on assignments with conflicting criteria, mentoring junior staff by providing guidance, explaining professional responsibilities, and reviewing work products, attending project meetings and presenting specific aspects of engineering assignments.

Communication skills include communicating effectively to both technical and nontechnical audiences.
