Engineering Technician

As an Engineering Technician, you will participate in a 12 month training program in one of the categories listed below, where you will assist higher level positions in the drafting and development of the necessary components for transportation projects. This may entail assisting with the preparation of a variety of highway plans, bridge plans, right-of-way plots, and other similar supplemental drawings. Work is performed independently and is reviewed by a supervisor to determine program effectiveness, adherence to agency and federal policies, and achievement of stated objectives. Upon successful completion of a probationary period, you will be promoted.

Bridge

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform bridge design and structural analysis in accordance with PennDOT standards and AASHTO specifications.
  • Assist with bridge inspections, including routine and special inspections, and document findings accurately.
  • Develop repair and rehabilitation plans and cost estimates.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure compliance with safety and design standards.
  • Utilize bridge management systems and software tools for data collection, reporting, and project tracking.
  • Prepare technical reports, design drawings, and documentation for internal review and regulatory compliance.

Roadway

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop for review roadway design plans, specifications, and estimates for highway projects.
  • Ensure roadway plans meet PennDOT standards, safety requirements, and regulatory guidelines.
  • Collaborate with construction, environmental, and traffic engineering teams to integrate design components.
  • Provide technical knowledge in support for roadway plan preparation.
  • Utilize design software and tools to produce accurate and efficient roadway plans.
  • Participate in project meetings and communicate effectively with stakeholders.
  • Assist in resolving design-related issues during project development.

Survey

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in performing field surveys for transportation projects including roadways, bridges, and right-of-way boundaries.
  • Learn to operate total stations, GPS receivers, and data collectors.
  • Support data collection, computation, and documentation tasks under supervision.
  • Participate in office-based survey analysis and map preparation.
  • Travel to various project sites within assigned region.
  • Ensure safety protocols and PennDOT procedures are followed during all survey operations.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Oil City. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

Required Experience, Training & Eligibility Qualifications

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • An associate degree in surveying, drafting, designing, civil, or any other appropriate field of engineering technology.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 9 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

Other Requirements:

  • This particular position also requires possession of a valid Class C Driver's License.
  • You must meet the PA residency requirement.

  • You must pass a background investigation.
