Job Title: Clinical Director

The Clinical Director is responsible for nursing, technical, support services and anesthesia technicians in Pre-Admission Testing, Operating Room, Ambulatory Procedure Unit and PACU to ensure that patient, physician and administration expectations are met or exceeded. This includes functional responsibility for the day-to-day operation of all components of the units and integration into the hospital's network, personnel, planning, budgeting, quality, safety, clinical review and committee structure. Holds a leadership role in planning for Perioperative Services including but not limited to personnel, programmatic, network and physical plant issues.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintains overall responsibility for day-to-day operations of assigned areas.
  • Oversees daily assignments of personnel consistent with the approved staffing pattern and unit budget. Makes recommendations to Administrative Director of Integrated Surgical Services for personnel needs.
  • Investigate the appropriate follow-up for incident / adverse events. Reports. Recommends and implements plans of correction.
  • Directs hiring of assigned areas. Conducts performance evaluations, addresses performance issues, coaching and disciplinary actions effectively and in accordance with policy and procedure.
  • Manages hospital and departmental policy regarding safety, attendance and dress code.
  • Works with the personnel to create a team approach and high staff satisfaction while achieving efficient/effectiveness staffing patterns.
  • Meets regularly with assigned areas on both a regular individual and group meeting. Leads, and participates in departmental and leadership meetings.
  • Consistently develops all staff members in professional development. Recommends approval for continuing education.
  • Addresses and manages all department based issues and provides timely feedback in all key areas.
  • Works with the Senior Nurse Executive in developing and monitoring a plan for continuous Work Force Vitality.
  • Oversees the Surgical Technologist Program, Distant Learning Program and other educational opportunities offered for assigned areas.
  • Demonstrates/models the hospital's core values and customer service behaviors in interactions with all customers (internal and external).
  • Develops and implements objectives and short and long-term goals for assigned areas.
  • Develops and implements policies, procedures, protocols and recommended practices. Evaluates each year and updates as needed.
  • Leads all quality-based initiatives that emphasize streamlined, efficient surgical operations. Appropriately completes audits per department guidelines, submitting to Administrative Director and Hospital QI.
  • Oversees obtaining necessary supplies and equipment; assists in proper use, maintenance and care of equipment.
  • Fosters interdisciplinary collaborative relationships; using critical thinking and analytical skills to evaluate outcome data; designing/implementing performance improvement strategies based on data; and promoting evidence-based practice through research utilization or conduct of practice research.
  • Reviews and updates general mission statements, philosophies, goals and objectives of assigned areas.
  • Assists in coordinating patient scheduling.
  • Regularly meets with all service line, hospital and network meetings affiliated with OR and PACU Operations.
  • Leads or participates in any safety-based initiative associated with patient, staff or physician safety as per Department of Health, JCAHO and other recommended bodies.
  • Maintains accountability for environment of safety as perceived by patients, families, medical staff, peers, and colleagues. Strategies for addressing potential or unresolved concerns of patients, families, physicians, peers, and colleagues are developed and implemented.
  • Collaborates with Infection Control to identify possible causes, solutions to and prevention of surgical site infections.
  • Demonstrates and implements regular educational opportunities to enhance knowledge of preventing and/or minimizing risks for disasters, fires, environmental hazards, electrical hazards, infection and personal injury.
  • Analyzes surgical/medical utilization and applies gathered data to determine if operational needs necessitate fiscal and hospital resources.
  • Consistently works with key leaders in Materials Management, Sterile Processing, Pharmacy, Hospital Nursing and all other areas where surgical services affects or is effected by any key projects or initiatives.
  • Works with the Administrative Director of Integrated Surgical Services in identifying costs for surgical procedures.
  • Assists the Administrative Director of Integrated Surgical Services in developing the capital and operational budgets and managing everyday expenses.

Physical and Sensory Requirements:

  • Ability to stand for up to 6 hours per day, 2 - 3 hours at a time, sitting for up to 2 - 3 hours per day, 1 hour at a time, walking for up to 4 hours per day.
  • Occasional light lifting of objects weighing up to 10 pounds and moving of patients.
  • Normal vision and hearing, manual dexterity sufficient to handle keyboard or other office equipment as per physical demands checklist.

Education:

  • Required: Licensed Registered Nurse in the State in which working (NJ/PA). BSN required.
  • Preferred: MSN or Masters' Degree in Business, Management, or related field.

Training and Experience:

  • Required: Three (3) years management/supervisory experience in an operating room setting. Demonstrated experience in surgical nursing.
  • Preferred: Experience with marketing or public relations on behalf of health care services.
