Job Summary:

What you need to know about the role- PayPal's Consumer Wallet organization is reimagining how we deliver wallet capabilities to our global customer base. As a Java Senior Staff Engineer within Consumer Wallet, you'll architect and lead the technical evolution of our Smart Messaging platform—a critical system that powers personalized, real-time communication across PayPal's ecosystem. This is a high-impact role where you'll own technical strategy, mentor engineering leaders, and drive architectural decisions that influence how millions of PayPal users experience our platform.

Essential Responsibilities:

Technical Leadership & Delivery

• Design and implement complex iOS features for PayPal's Consumer Wallet application, serving millions of users globally
• Lead technical architecture decisions for mobile initiatives including Apple Wallet Extensions, SDK integrations, and platform migrations
• Drive end-to-end ownership of iOS features from design through deployment, ensuring high quality, performance, and scalability
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Android, Backend, Web, Product, Design, and QA to deliver cohesive user experiences
• Contribute to technical roadmap planning and provide accurate effort estimations for complex projects

Code Quality & Best Practices

• Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested Swift/Objective-C code following PayPal's engineering standards
• Implement comprehensive unit and UI testing strategies to ensure code reliability
• Conduct thorough code reviews and mentor junior engineers on iOS best practices
• Champion performance optimization, memory management, and app stability improvements
• Stay current with iOS SDK updates and Apple platform changes, evaluating adoption strategies

Cross-Team Collaboration

• Partner with backend teams on API design, GraphQL schema development, and service integration
• Work closely with Identity, Risk, Compliance, and Platform teams on feature implementations
• Coordinate with international market teams for region-specific requirements and launches
• Participate in technical design reviews and architecture discussions across the organization

Innovation & Problem Solving

• Identify and resolve complex technical challenges in mobile payment flows and wallet experiences
• Propose innovative solutions to improve app performance, user experience, and development velocity
• Evaluate and integrate third-party frameworks and tools to enhance development capabilities
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives in development processes and tooling

Additional Responsibilities & Preferred Qualifications:

The Consumer Wallet engineering organization spans across SJC and Bangalore on mobile (Android and iOS), backend services, and full-stack capabilities. We're executing transformational initiatives including platform migrations, market expansion, and next-generation wallet features. You'll work directly with platform leads across Android, iOS, Web/GraphQL, and backend engineering, collaborating with cross-functional teams in Identity, Product Platform, Compliance, and Risk. What do you need to bring-

Experience & Technical Skills

• 6+ years of professional iOS development experience with shipped applications in the App Store
• Expert-level proficiency in Swift with strong understanding of iOS SDK frameworks
• Deep knowledge of iOS architecture patterns (MVVM, VIPER, Clean Architecture, etc.)
• Extensive experience with UIKit, SwiftUI, Combine/RxSwift, and modern iOS development paradigms
• Strong understanding of RESTful APIs, GraphQL, and mobile-backend integration patterns
• Proficiency in Xcode, Git, CI/CD pipelines, and mobile development tooling
• Experience with iOS security best practices, including keychain, encryption, and secure data storage

Domain Knowledge

• Experience building consumer-facing applications at scale with high reliability requirements
• Understanding of mobile payment systems, digital wallets, or fintech applications (highly preferred)
• Familiarity with Apple Pay, Wallet integrations, and PassKit framework
• Knowledge of mobile app performance optimization and monitoring tools

Leadership & Collaboration

• Proven ability to lead technical initiatives and drive projects to completion
• Strong communication skills with ability to explain complex technical concepts to diverse audiences
• Experience mentoring engineers and contributing to team growth
• Track record of working effectively in cross-functional, distributed teams

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Apple Wallet Extensions and PassKit development
• Knowledge of GraphQL client implementation and Apollo iOS framework
• Familiarity with microservices architecture and platform migration projects
• Experience with international market launches and localization
• Understanding of regulatory compliance requirements in financial services
• Contributions to open-source iOS projects or technical community involvement
