Manager, Database Engineering

PayPal, Inc. seeks Manager, Database Engineering in San Jose, CA

Job Duties: Lead and inspire a team of talented database engineers while working closely with product/program management, developers, architects and SRE to drive forward the vision, architecture, design, implementation, optimization and tuning of Venmo Data Platforms. Implement processes to drive strong operational hygiene for all components and systems within Venmo Data Platforms. Manage scrum process, roadmap and drive planning for the Venmo Data Platforms team. Lead complex initiatives that span across multiple teams/cross-organizations and have companywide impact. Provide regular updates on the key initiatives to the leadership. Conduct performance and career conversations and regular 1:1s with direct reports. Provide technical and tactical input on key initiatives and projects. Prepare and work with the team/partner-teams for detailed Root Cause Analysis of any Venmo Data Platforms' production incidents and share/present the same with the leadership team with plans for improvements in the process. Partial telecommuting permitted from within a commutable distance.

Minimum Requirements: Master's degree, or foreign equivalent, in Computer Science, Engineering or a closely related field plus eight years of experience in the job offered or a related occupation.

Special Skill Requirements:

  • Operating on-prem/cloud databases and/or distributed systems (5 years)
  • Large scale distributed datastores- designing, architecting/re-architecting (5 years)
  • RDBMS migrations/upgrades from on-prem to cloud and within cloud (5 years)
  • Managing AWS DynamoDB, AWS DocumentDB, Cassandra, MySQL, AWS Aurora, Redis, or Elastic/OpenSearch (5 years)
  • Infrastructure as code (AWS CLI, AWS CloudFormation, Terraform, Ansible, Puppet) (5 years)
  • Writing python scripts automating database operations (5 years)
  • Managing document datastores and migrating from on-prem MongoDB to cloud solutions (3 years)
  • Writing Github actions workflows automating database operations (3 years)
  • Managing PostgreSQL either on-prem or in cloud (2 years)

The base pay for this role will depend on where you work and the relevant experience and expertise you bring. The expected range of pay for this role by location is:

Primary Location | Pay Range:

San Jose, California | Salary: $226,138.00-300,500.00 per annum. 40 hours per week; M-F, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Additional compensation for this role may include an annual performance bonus, equity, or other incentive compensation, as applicable.
