The Data Engineering vertical is focused on the infrastructure, pipelines, and systems that power modern data-driven products and AI/ML applications at scale. We deliver practical, implementation-focused learning resources to help engineers design, build, and optimize robust data platforms. Key segments currently include:

• Databases: design, optimization, scalability, AI-ready vector search integration
• Data Architecture: end-to-end design patterns, cloud-native and hybrid systems, data mesh, lakehouse
• Data Engineering: orchestration, workflow automation, ETL/ELT frameworks, AI-augmented pipelines

Topics include data pipelines (Airflow, Prefect, Spark), streaming (Kafka, Flink), databases and data lakes (Postgres, MongoDB, Delta Lake, Snowflake, Databricks), cloud platforms (AWS Glue, BigQuery, Azure Synapse), and practices like DataOps, dbt, and data quality with Great Expectations. The vertical is uniquely positioned at the intersection of infrastructure and intelligence, addressing the critical foundations that enable data science, AI, and modern applications to thrive in production environments.

As Content Engineer for the Data Engineering vertical, your primary objective is to deliver high-quality, market-relevant learning products that address the evolving needs of data engineers. You will work closely with authors, experts, and technical reviewers to ensure our books, courses, and related resources set the industry standard in clarity, accuracy, and applied value.

Reporting directly to the Portfolio Director, you will own editorial quality from concept to publication, while also contributing to the vertical's strategic growth through competitive immersion, user research, and experimentation with new product formats.

In summary, the above means that a critical 'power skill' in the new Packt organization will be adaptability and flexibility – the ability to adjust quickly to changing circumstances and new challenges while remaining effective and open to different approaches.

Responsibilities & Expected Outcomes

Editorial & Product Development

• Evaluate and refine proposals and outlines with a focus on user needs, market demand, and technical accuracy.
• Conduct substantive edits to improve clarity, structure, and technical flow.
• Collaborate with technical reviewers to guarantee correctness of code, architectures, and workflows.
• Provide content health checks for planning and time allocation.
• Expected outcome: Publication of content that resonates with practicing data engineers and achieves strong market performance.

Expert & Author Collaboration

• Provide structured, constructive feedback to help authors create practical, implementation-driven content.
• Coach content creators on techniques for teaching difficult or complex concepts.
• Build positive but challenging relationships to maximize author potential and satisfaction.
• Expected outcome: Strong long-term partnerships with recognized experts; higher-quality learning content; and repeat collaborations that enhance Packt's reputation and influence.

Market & User Research

• Track trends across tools and platforms (AWS, Azure, Databricks, Spark, Kafka, dbt, emerging data engineering tech).
• Benchmark against competing titles and incorporate market intelligence into editorial strategy.
• Seek customer feedback throughout the editorial process and apply it to product shaping.
• Expected outcome: A portfolio that reflects real-world practitioner needs and positions Packt as a thought leader.

Quality & Process Ownership

• Own quality sign-off for all Data Engineering titles and products.
• Balance speed-to-market with editorial depth, ensuring timely yet high-quality releases.
• Ensure compliance with Packt's publishing standards, addressing plagiarism and structural weaknesses where necessary.
• Contribute to editorial workflow improvements by sharing feedback and best practices.
• Expected outcome: Consistently high user satisfaction, improved ROI per title, and reliable editorial practices that adapt smoothly to changing content and workflow needs.

Strategic & Multi-Format Responsibilities

• Contribute beyond books by supporting multi-format publishing (courses, newsletters, live sessions, and derivative products) in line with user preferences.
• Track competing titles, market changes, and customer feedback to ensure Packt's Data Engineering portfolio remains differentiated and relevant.
• Take on stretch projects and test new product types to evolve the vertical's publishing model.
• Enable author growth by helping them sharpen teaching approaches and adapt complex topics for diverse learners.
• Identify inefficiencies in editorial workflows and implement improvements that raise efficiency and consistency.
• Decide when a product should be signed off for production, revised, or cancelled; ensure plagiarism is addressed; and balance speed-to-market with editorial depth.
• Expected outcome: A Data Engineering portfolio that is not only high quality but also agile, competitive, and aligned with evolving user and market needs.

Team Structure

• Reports directly to the Portfolio Director – Data Engineering.
• Collaborates with Growth Lead, marketing, and product management to align editorial and go-to-market priorities.
• Works closely with Relationship Leads (RLs) to develop, coach, and grow author talent, ensuring strong pipelines of repeat collaborators.

• 3+ years of editorial, technical writing, or content engineering experience.
