Mechanical Engineer

Otis is seeking a Mechanical Engineer responsible for supporting awarded contracts across field offices in the US and Canada. This role involves collaborating with a cross-functional team, including engineers, drafters, supply chain managers, code experts, quality engineers, and technical fellows. Key responsibilities include providing timely responses to sales office inquiries, supporting special calculations, performing FEA of structural components, working with the drafting team for drawing updates, and assisting with special material ordering and reordering lost or damaged parts by coordinating with the AMT team. The ideal candidate should be a self-starter with excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively. They will work on cross-functional teams, interacting with members from manufacturing operations, supply management, contract logistics, finance, and field support to ensure that contract-engineered designs meet organizational requirements.
On a typical day you will:
- Review seismic tie down details in layouts for accuracy
- Coordinate certification of layouts with structural consultants for seismic jobs
- Coordinate layout changes with the drafting team
- Interpret engineering drawings, building structural and architectural drawings
- Participate in meetings with Otis local office to clarify questions and/or support with installation support
- Participate in meetings with Otis local offices, general contractor and structural engineer of record (SEOR) to ensure requirements are met to ensure safety and code compliance
- Provide value engineering design solutions to reduce costs for customers
- Create specially modified designs using 3D CAD software for jobs that deviate from standard configuration
- Create BOM and specification documents for special designs/situations
- Perform structural calculations based on ASME A17.1 and ASCE-7 codes
- Perform FEA of structural components for special situations
What you will need to be successful:
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field
- 2+ years of experience in mechanical engineering or a related area
- Strong background in mechanical engineering concepts such as statics, dynamics, component design, and connection design (welding/bolting)
- Proficiency in one or more of the following software: AutoCAD, CREO, ANSYS
- Ability to read, interpret, and understand technical drawings and building plans
- Familiarity with elevator components and systems preferred
- Understanding of the International Building Code (IBC) for seismic and non-seismic strength requirements, ASME A17.1 elevator code, and ASCE-7 code is desired
- Ability to perform mechanical engineering hand calculations for quick checks
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to take ownership of work outcomes
- Ability to work with minimal direction
- Strong communication and problem-solving skills
- Experience working in cross-functional teams, with respect for individual differences and an openness to diverse thinking
- Effective time management skills to ensure on-time project delivery
- Detail-oriented approach
- Travel up to 15% domestically
- Ability to work in office 3 days a week and 2 days remote; subject to change
