First Assistant Engineer Hopper Dredge

This position is aboard a dredging vessel, travel on the vessel is required (during dredging season). Schedules generally run 15 days on and 13 days off, with 1 rotation of 8 days on and 6 days off in January each year. This announcement will be used to recruit for one position on the Essayons. Future selections may be made for either dredge vessel.

Responsibilities include:

  • Routine inspection of all engineer spaces and equipment including dredge pumps, bow thruster, steering gear, and emergency areas.
  • Starting, stopping, and adjusting engine room equipment as necessary.
  • Observing pressure and temperature gauges and alarms and listening for sounds which indicate abnormal operating conditions.
  • Regular periodic inspection of all operating machinery to ensure proper functioning.
  • Supervising and/or performing the operation, routine repair, and maintenance of all engine room equipment.
  • Assisting Chief Engineer and Assistant Engineer with major repairs.
  • Installing, maintaining, testing, and repairing AC and DC electrical systems, equipment, components, converters, safety devices, wiring, and controls.
  • Inspecting and servicing pilot house and engine room controls, gyrocompass and steering, fire detection, ventilation, refrigeration, lighting, emergency, and communication systems.
  • Ensuring that all tests and analyses are conducted in connection with the operation of the Engine Department.

Requirements include:

  • Experience: You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
  • Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): You must possess a current United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) First Assistant Engineer 2250 horsepower, (Yaquina) or higher and a current Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) OR You must possess a current United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) First Assistant Engineer Unlimited Horse Power (Essayons) and a current Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). You MUST UPLOAD your USCG Credentials or you will be rated ineligible.
  • Working Conditions include:

    • Exposure to abnormal heat, dirty and greasy equipment, and moving machinery.
    • Subject to burns by hot pipes or escaping steam.
    • Constant hazard of boat traffic and danger of being thrown against moving equipment and drowning if the vessel takes in water.
    • Regularly in areas where noise exceeds 80 decibels.
    • Exposure to the effects of paints, acids, and solvents.
    • Exposed to extremes of weather conditions and noise.
    • Danger of slippery decks and drowning.

    Physical Effort includes:

    • Exerting moderate to heavy physical effort in handling engine room equipment.
    • Possessing color perception in order to perform troubleshooting and repair work on the full range of equipment.
    • Lifting and carrying equipment and supplies normally up to 45 lbs. and occasionally over 45 lbs.
    • Prolonged standing, walking, and climbing.
    • Maintaining good lower back physical condition.

    The position is dual-rated to the position of Chief Engineer, Hopper Dredge, WJ-4742-15(HE A30). If qualified and possesses appropriate U.S. Coast Guard License/Certification, incumbent may be assigned to perform these duties on an intermittent, dual-rated capacity. While working in this capacity the FLSA status will be exempt.
