Field Service Engineer – Automation Tools (Semiconductor)

Manpower Engineering is looking for an Automation Tool Field Service Engineer for our Hillsboro, OR semiconductor manufacturing client. Contract to hire. The Service Engineer installs and supports automation tools such as robots, motion control systems, PLCs, etc., for a semiconductor company. Support work being done remotely via phone or laptop. Only need to be onsite when machine goes down. Must live within 45 minutes of Hillsboro, OR.

Primary Duties:

  • This role, as of today, is on-call. You will only go into plant if called in by client and if the issue can't be fixed over the phone. The tool being supported is PUD tool (pack, unpack, dump).
  • It is crucial that this person be someone who does not need direction, be a true self-starter. Have the mindset of an independent contractor. Know what your job is and work it with the customer.
  • When not taking service calls or not onsite, you must be self-motivated to be able to read service manuals to be able to solve problems in a short time. Be ready to support.
  • On call 24/7 but calls after 5pm are very infrequent.
  • Sometime in 2026, will coordinate and perform installation, startup, validation, and commissioning of new tool at customer facility.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on installed equipment under contract or customer Purchase Order.
  • Review drawings, schematics, manuals, and other pertinent information to determine the best solution and proper tools for system set up or problem resolution.
  • Communicate with the project team to ensure project awareness.
  • Keep accurate service call records and prepare service/warranty and other reports for customers and internal distribution in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate with the Engineering Department to ensure that drawings, technical manuals, sequence of operation, and PLC and HMI programs are current and correct.

Required Skills:

  • BS/AS Degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred. Equivalent work experience may substitute.
  • At least 2 years' experience in a technical, customer focused, field service position.
  • Be able to work with minimal direction and function without a set schedule.
  • Proficient with Microsoft 365, PLCs, HMI and PCs used in industrial applications.
  • Solid PLC/Controls experience with ability to understand ladder logic to know what is or is not happening in sequence and edit code as needed.
  • Must live within 45 minutes of Hillsboro, OR.
  • Preferred to have experience working in cleanroom environments, following all customer protocols.
  • Have a firm understanding of motion control systems (e.g., robotics).
  • Have a firm understanding of mechanical devices employed in systems or tools such as robots, conveyors, shuttles, and other material handling devices.
  • Excellent customer focus and strong attention to detail. Able to effectively respond to customer complaints and high-pressure situations at customer sites.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and troubleshooting skills. Able to solve problems and handle a variety of situations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Proficient with standard electronic test equipment. Able to read electrical schematics and controls and mechanical drawings.
