Assistant Dean Of Students And Director Of Disability Access Services

Disability Access Services is seeking an Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Disability Access Services. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position. The Assistant Dean of Students and Director of Disability Access Services (ADD-DAS), reporting to the Senior Associate Vice President and Dean of Students, is responsible for the comprehensive leadership of the office and programs of Disability Access Services (DAS) and is a member of the Dean of Students Dean Team. DAS is dedicated to ensuring equitable access to higher education and equal opportunity for disabled students. In alignment with Oregon State University's mission, DAS supports a historically underrepresented population by facilitating access and coordinating reasonable and legally mandated accommodations based on documented disabilities. As part of the Office of the Dean of Students, DAS embraces and promotes the principles of universal design to foster an inclusive campus environment where all can participate. The ADD-DAS provides visionary leadership, strategic direction, and administrative oversight for Disability Access Services, ensuring compliance with the ADA, Rehabilitation Act and all relevant legislation. This dual-role position is responsible for ensuring equitable access and inclusive support for disabled students, while also contributing to the broader mission of supporting student success and well-being within the Office of the Dean of Students and Division of Student Affairs. The ADD-DAS leads the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of programs that support student learning and success. The ADD-DAS works closely with campus partners and collaborates on assuring program activities and operations meet accessibility standards and offer a barrier free experience as much as possible to all, including disabled persons. The ADD-DAS is responsible for overseeing and coordinating a range of services, programs, resources, and procedures that support disabled students. This includes identifying student needs, interpreting relevant requirements, and ensuring appropriate accommodations are provided without compromising academic standards or requiring significant changes to academic programs. The ADD-DAS fosters collaboration among students, faculty, and staff to promote an inclusive and supportive campus environment to cultivate a sense of belonging. The ADD-DAS manages the office's budget, funding allocations, and record-keeping processes. The ADD-DAS oversees the delivery of direct services to students and makes referrals to other campus or community resources in alignment with university policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Functional Area Leadership: Provides leadership, vision, and sets the direction for DAS, including all policies and procedures for services, administrative functions, budgeting and personnel management. Directs the development, implementation, oversight, evaluation, and assessment of DAS goals and program learning outcomes for students with disabilities and ensures students can access OSU programs and services. Monitors the fiscal management of Education & General Funds and OSU Foundation DAS accounts. Oversees the preparation of departmental publications, statistical reports, and annual reports. Serves as a University resource for interpretation of, and compliance with, federal regulations relevant to disabled students. Serves as a University resource on issues and access related to Universal Design principles for learning as well as design standards for accessibility. Develops procedures for, and monitors program activities and operations to assure compliance with disability related State and Federal regulations. Develops, oversees, and disseminates informational materials to students, staff, and community members, including Faculty Guidelines, the DAS handbook, and other publications. Provides development, training, and informational opportunities related to people with disabilities and disability related policies and laws for academic departments. Works with various departments, colleges, Athletics, and Student Affairs departments to facilitate access and accommodations; identifies alternative methods of achieving access or equally effective accommodations. Collaborates with the Office of Equal Opportunity and Access (OSU's Americans with Disabilities Act/Section 504 coordinating office) to ensure effective coordination and implementation of accommodations for student employees, pregnant students, students with religious needs, and gender-based accommodations. Maintains cooperative relationships with vocational rehabilitation agencies, the Commission for the Blind, and other local, State, and Federal agencies that work with persons with disabilities. Responsible for responding to the concerns of disabled students per the DAS grievance/appeals procedures. Mediates disability-related academic issues between faculty and students. Participates on committees designed to facilitate access to programs, services, built environments, and digital environments. Oversees the conception, development, and delivery of DAS programs and services to educate the student campus community on accommodations, accessibility, and inclusive design practices.
  • Supervision and Oversight: Provides leadership, supervision and direction for the unit and direct reports (staff). Full supervisory responsibility for direct reports including training, evaluating, and recommending pay, promotional or other employment decisions; act on personnel issues, up to and including termination; address grievances, developing a framework for corrective actions as necessary. Creates an environment within DAS that leverages the strengths and accomplishments of staff, promotes synergy and teamwork, and empowers experienced professionals with diverse responsibilities.
  • Office of the Dean of Students, Student Affairs, and OSU Leadership and Support: Serves fully on designated Office of the Dean of Students teams (Dean Team, Director's Group, Student Care Team, etc.) Serves on or assigns a DAS designee to high-profile leadership committees, on-campus and within the community, promoting policies, programs, and advocates for changes that affect student life and support student well-being (Ex: Academic Standing Committee, Academic Regulations Committee, Commencement Committee, etc.). Assist in the development and execution of programming, including faculty/staff and student-facing events and initiatives in partnership with campus colleagues. Collaborate with other campus offices to provide support to students and expedite resolution of issues.
  • Other: Cultivates and influences relationships with campus and non-campus stakeholders (e.g., faculty, students, staff, neighbors, campus and local/city law enforcement authorities, local government officials, alumni, parents, local businesses, etc.). Involvement with related professional organizations. Other as assigned.

What You Will Need

  • Master's Degree in Disability Services, Rehabilitation Counseling, Counseling Psychology, Educational Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Higher Education Administration or other related fields.
  • Eight to ten years of progressive administrative leadership experience in Disability/Accessibility Services, with three or more of those years in higher education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge base and understanding of all relevant legislation, Americans Disabilities Act of 1990 as amended in 2008 (ADA), section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, related standards, and translation of legislation into policy and practices.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of conditions associated with disability and the impact, existence of barriers, and reasonable accommodations in a higher education setting.
  • Deep understanding of service delivery for disabled students such as accommodated testing, effective communication through interpreting and captioning, alternative formats, assistive technology, notetaking services, etc.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills and high level of emotional intelligence.
  • Effective decision making and professional judgment skills.
  • Experience hiring, evaluating, supervising, and training staff.
  • A demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity, inclusion, accessibility, and belonging.

What We Would Like You to Have

  • Terminal degree.
  • Demonstrated practice of supporting multiple student populations (athletes, international students, student veterans, minoritized students, student parents, etc.).
  • Experience in budget planning and management.
  • Second language proficiency (American Sign Language, Spanish, Arabic, etc.).

Recommended Full-Time Salary Range: $95,500 - $115,000.
