Display Electrical Engineer

About the Team

The Display Engineering team is responsible for architecting, prototyping, designing, and validating the displays that enable next-generation AI systems. We partner closely with industrial design, mechanical, software, graphics, and system engineering teams to deliver reliable, high-performance hardware at scale. Our work bridges deep technical expertise with cross-functional collaboration to bring world-class display technology into impactful consumer products.

About the Role

OpenAI is seeking a Display Electrical Engineer to lead the design, development, and validation of advanced display subsystems for next-generation consumer products. You'll define Display Driver IC (DDIC) requirements, work closely with display vendors on flex design, and ensure robust system-level integration of display hardware. From DDIC IP feature validation to power optimization and timing control, you will own the full lifecycle of display electrical engineering—from architecture through bring-up to production.

This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model with an expectation of being onsite 4 days per week, and offer relocation assistance to new employees.

In this role, you will:

  • Define DDIC requirements and drive flex circuit design in collaboration with product design, system EE, optics, graphics, and display vendors
  • Own electrical validation of display systems, including DDIC IP feature verification, timing control, and power sequencing
  • Characterize and optimize display power consumption, implementing strategies to meet system-level efficiency targets
  • Evaluate and mitigate interference and noise between display modules and the broader system (SoC, wireless, speakers, sensors, charging, etc.)
  • Lead lab bring-up, debug, and root-cause analysis of display-related issues
  • Collaborate with mechanical, system, and software engineering partners to ensure seamless integration of the display subsystem
  • Establish best practices for display electrical validation, design reviews, and program milestones
  • Support vendor engagement and provide technical leadership in display module design discussions

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have extensive experience designing and validating display systems in consumer electronics, automotive, or other high-volume hardware domains
  • Are deeply knowledgeable in display electrical fundamentals, including DDIC, timing controllers, power optimization, and display interface standards (e.g., MIPI DSI, eDP, LVDS)
  • Bring strong expertise in flex design, vendor collaboration, and system-level display integration
  • Are proficient with schematic capture and PCB/flex design tools, and comfortable leading complex cross-functional hardware builds
  • Excel in lab-based validation and debug, with a proven track record of root-cause analysis of display/system interactions
  • Understand and can optimize system-level trade-offs across display performance, power, thermal, and EMI/EMC domains
  • Enjoy leading vendor engagements and setting high technical standards for display design and validation
  • Are motivated by building cutting-edge products that combine world-class display technology with high-impact consumer experiences
