VP of Engineering

Onsights is a venture-backed AI startup focused on bringing e-commerce analytics to brick-and-mortar mall operators, retailers and shopping centers. We are tackling a $17 trillion market by building the world's most accurate location-intelligence solution that helps our customers understand the behavior of every visitor to their location: where they go, what they do and most importantly why.

We have successfully deployed solutions to government agencies and are seeing unprecedented interest in our solution from large enterprise customers. Onsights is looking for curious minded professionals who are passionate about developing themselves in a collaborative team setting where individual strengths are valued and utilized. We are a culturally and geographically diverse team, with approximately 25 team members across five US states and three countries.

Position Overview

This opportunity is US-remote with 5-10% travel.

The Vice President of Engineering will be responsible for leading all aspects of the company's engineering organization — including Platforms, Applications/Services, QA, and Cybersecurity. This executive will play a pivotal role in shaping our technology vision, building scalable systems, and cultivating a high-performance engineering culture.

As a key member of the leadership team, the VP of Engineering will partner closely with key stakeholders throughout the company to lead in delivering reliable, secure, and scalable software solutions that power the future of retail AI. Additionally, the VP of Engineering will build trusted relationships with customers, acting as the technical bridge between their goals and our engineering roadmap.

Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership

• Define and execute the long-term technology strategy aligned with the company's business goals
• Serve as a strategic advisor to the CTO, the CEO, and the executive team on all technical matters
• Execute product strategy: translate product vision into clear engineering roadmaps and deliverables
• Build, scale, inspire, and mentor a high-performing, multidisciplinary engineering team
• Build and maintain technical relationships with customers serving as a liaison between the customer and Onsights technical team

Team & Culture Management

• Lead and mentor engineering teams across Platform/Infrastructure, Applications/Services, QA, and Cybersecurity functions
• Embrace and model our company values. Foster a culture of honesty, ownership, accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.
• Establish and maintain best practices for development, deployment, and quality assurance
• Recruit, develop, and retain top engineering talent

Technology & Operations

• Oversee system architecture, infrastructure, and platform scalability for Onsights platform and enterprise systems
• Ensure platform uptime and performance meet customer expectations
• Enforce cybersecurity controls across environments
• Implement robust DevOps practices for CI/CD, monitoring, and automation
• Drive technical excellence and coding standards through modern development methodologies
• Work with R&D teams to accelerate feature delivery and experimentation

Security & Compliance

• Develop, drive, and own the company's information security strategy and ensure compliance with relevant standards (e.g., SOC 2, GDPR, CCPA)
• Implement and enforce security best practices across infrastructure and application layers

Execution & Delivery

• Oversee end-to-end software delivery from concept to deployment
• Establish and track key engineering KPIs related to quality, velocity, and reliability
• Ensure on-time, on-budget delivery of technical milestones
• Keep apprised of latest developments in the industry, including opportunities to leverage LLMs, GenAI, etc.

Qualifications

Required:

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 5+ years in a senior leadership role
• Proven success scaling engineering organizations in a SaaS or AI-driven startup environment
• Experience building and operationalizing big data system and AI powered solutions
• Hands-on experience leading cross-functional engineering teams
• Deep understanding of modern native / hybrid cloud architecture
• Strong technical foundation in scalable distributed systems
• Demonstrated ability to build and sustain high-performing engineering teams
• Exceptional communication and collaboration skills with both technical and non-technical internal and external stakeholders, including customers

Preferred:

• Experience in retail technology, e-commerce, or AI/ML-based platforms
• Familiarity with MLOps, data pipelines, and model deployment
• Background in agile product development and rapid prototyping
• Prior experience leading through growth phases (startup → scale-up)
