The Student Engineering Intern position reports to the Equipment Engineering Team at Ohio State's Nanotech West Laboratory (NTW) as well as the NTW Director. This position is responsible for supporting laboratory operations in 1) semiconductor fabrication in the NTW Class 100 Cleanroom Laboratory, 2) semiconductor epitaxy in the Metalorganic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) Laboratory and 3) battery materials synthesis and test in the Energy Innovation Lab. Responsibilities will primarily include equipment and facility maintenance supporting laboratory operations. Additional tasks may include regular equipment process qualifications, learning and supporting basic processing or characterization tasks and various laboratory sustaining tasks as assigned. This position will require working in a controlled cleanroom environment and working with chemicals (including wearing basic personal protective equipment).
Education and Experience: Required: Enrolled in degree program in Engineering Technology, Engineering, Science or related field; prior work experience in equipment repair or maintenance; must be a self-starter with demonstrated mechanical skills and desire to gain hands-on experience; must be a team player; must be able to work a minimum of 15 hours/week. Desired: Prior experience in semiconductor processes or a cleanroom environment desired; desire to gain experience working in high-tech science and engineering fields, such as semiconductor and microelectronics fabrication; has solid written and verbal communication skills; is highly organized and enjoys interacting with a talented and diverse group of people; can develop into a creative problem-solver; pays strong attention to detail and cares about quality in work products; has appropriate computer skills, including proficiency in Excel and Microsoft Office applications.
The position pays $13.00/hr. Location is at the Nanotech West Lab on the Ohio State University's West Campus at 1381 Kinnear Road; includes free parking and is close to a COTA and campus bus stop. Nanotech West Laboratory (NTW) is a 36,000-square-foot shared user facility servicing the Ohio State materials community and is open to both academic and industrial researchers. Managed by the Institute for Materials Research (IMR), NTW is an extensively equipped and fully staffed facility where researchers can access laboratories and equipment, as well as take advantage of in-house training, process and project support. NTW's user-accessible facility resources include a 6,000-square-foot nanofabrication cleanroom, major shared facilities for semiconductor and oxide epitaxy, materials and device characterization, 3D printing for clinical applications and shared labs for research in energy storage materials and devices. Research activities at NTW span a range of cutting-edge materials research that is rather extraordinary for a single facility – including GaN/AlGaN and β-Ga₂O₃ materials and devices, solar cells and infrared focal plane arrays to microfluidics, biotechnology, 3D printing of anatomic models, material synthesis and testing for energy storage and the fabrication of structures for use in the study of basic physics and chemistry. NTW is located in the Science Village Building on Ohio State University's West Campus at 1381 Kinnear Road.
