Environmental Monitoring Technician

Position Summary: Under general supervision, performs work of moderate difficulty in installing, operating, calibrating, modifying, maintaining and repairing a variety of specialized equipment and instruments needed in the air, water, wastewater, stormwater, noise and soil sampling programs; performs more routine tests in both the laboratory and the field to determine the extent and nature of environmental concerns; conducts special studies and performs related work as required.

Essential Job Functions:

• Assists in preparing and reviewing industrial wastewater discharge permits to determine the nature and legal compliance of the discharge.
• Participates in inspections, surveillance, and investigations to assist in determining the compliance and enforcement of individual sources with air, water, wastewater, noise and soil rules, regulations and guidelines.
• Collects and analyzes air, water, wastewater and soil samples using appropriate sampling and analytical techniques according to prescribed regulatory standards in hazardous atmospheres and environments and various weather conditions.
• Installs, operates, calibrates, modifies, maintains and repairs a variety of environmental monitoring equipment and instruments, including particulate air samplers, effluent composite samplers, and radiation monitors, continuous sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, ozone, particulate and carbon monoxide monitors.
• Assists in routine or emergency field tests to minimize adverse environmental effects to the environment and to promote a safe, efficient and cost-effective operation of the Wastewater Treatment Plant, and its sewer network.
• Records, tabulates, monitors and charts data from the various environmental sampling sites for the purposes of environmental monitoring, inter-laboratory certification, quality control and technical reports related to the general activity of environmental control and monitoring, using automated and manual methods.
• Maintains and revises files sufficient to accurately record and assess data related to environmental concerns and the high strength program.
• Calculates charges for landfill leachate and high strength surcharges for monthly billing purposes.
• Prepares correspondence for regulated community on monitoring and billing issues.
• Assists in all work necessary to maintain and update an effective control program, including assisting in the setup of an environmental monitoring network.
• Assists in the laboratory, field and with routine administrative duties associated with this division.

Required Education, Experience, and Certifications:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Environmental Management
