Principal Structural Engineer

Duties And Responsibilities
Reporting to the Lead Structural Engineer or Lead appointed as applicable, the Principal Structural Engineer is responsible for carrying out Structural Engineering for Oceaneering. This role plays an essential part of the success of the business by ensuring that the company continues to drive innovation and deliver commercially viable products, to achieve the Companies objectives of growth and profitability. The role will interface with both internal engineering teams and external clients; therefore, the individual must be a proficient communicator. A key focus of the role is on developing relationships with existing and new clients and building business with them.
Essential Functions:
- Experienced and competent in specifying modifications to existing structures/equipment or designing new structure/equipment including but not limited to: Fabrication and constructability techniques, Lifting aid design, installation techniques and LOLER lift plans, Application of structural analysis packages & Survey Techniques
- Conversant and knowledgeable with respect to current and new legislation and standards
- Experienced in producing calculations required for the role and participate in design reviews
- Experienced in approval, checking and preparation of design/engineering documentation (also check interdisciplinary documents where necessary)
- Produce documentation deliverables for inclusion in workpack, and or, design books, on time to meet deadlines
- Proficient in preparation of engineering, construction and equipment scopes
- Conduct site surveys both on and offshore
- Provide input into project planning as part of the team for achieving the target and completion within the budget and schedule; ensuring that all engineering work is carried out in accordance with priorities and schedules
- Management of 3rd party suppliers in the execution of engineering delivery – including specification of equipment, materials and subcontract scopes, review of supplier's quotations and/or preparation of technical bid assessments as required
- Deputising for Lead as required. Supporting and supervising tasks delegated to direct reports / respective team
- Perform the role of Technical Authority when appointed to do so
- Provide leadership to the delivery of structural engineering services
- Support the management of Oceaneering contract providing assurance on technical delivery and cost management including budgets/forecasting
- Manage and develop engineers by actively mentoring and promoting talent to cultivate an engineering team capable of delivering a best-in-class service
- Ensure projects are performed in accordance with industry codes/standards, legislation, accreditation, and Oceaneering policies/procedures
- Facilitate the development and continuous improvement of the engineering process between Oceaneering and the Client within and across various assets
- Develop strong relationships internally with the management team and externally with Clients to ensure excellence in delivery and demonstrate Oceaneering's capabilities
- Ensure Oceaneering processes and procedures for all aspects of structural engineering are maintained and developed
- Lead, develop or input to bids, proposals, marketing material in support of global operations
- Support the Business Development function in the identification and development/delivery of marketing to prospective clients
Non-Essential Functions:
- Represent Oceaneering on appropriate industry technical forums and seminars
- Assist with any other duties as and when required
- Undertake specific projects as instructed by management
Safety:
- Ensure that the Safety policies and procedures are understood and adhered to so far as is reasonably practicable in order to ensure a safe working environment.
- Offshore trips to support and oversee structural inspections will likely be required to meet the requirements of this role. Offshore trips are expected on a bi-annual basis however this may be more.
- Overseas trip to support structural scope maybe required to meet the requirements of this role. Oversea trips are expected on a bi-annual basis however this may be more.
- Carry out work in accordance with the Company Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality Systems.
- Perform the assigned tasks with due diligence regarding the Integrated Management Systems on the Company.
- Eliminate waste of whatever form, to suggest the use of more environmentally friendly substances and practices and contribute to the continuous improvement of the environment.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position may have direct supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications
Required:
- Bachelors Degree in Engineering related discipline, Structural or Civil preferred
- Award of professional engineer status within local region e.g. CEng/EUR ING/PEDES
Desired:
- Masters Degree in Engineering related discipline, Structural or Civil preferred
- Offshore medical and survival certification
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics:
- Extensive industry experience of which a minimum of 5 years delivering engineering services, and 3 years in a supervisory role
- Proven success in delivering technical projects
- Expert knowledge of offshore / onshore structural engineering and management
- Expert knowledge of codes, standards and regulations applicable to structural engineering and design of onshore and offshore (both topsides and jacket) structures
- Must be familiar with QA/QC systems/procedures
- Provide leadership, co-ordination or guidance to others
- Good communicator, both written, verbal and technical to make complex terminology simple for the benefit of others
- Good client or support contractor relationship skills at various levels of seniority or diverse cultures
