Someone in this role would typically have a Bachelor's degree in Engineering. This position can be hired at any level in our professional career framework, depending on business need at the time of hire.

**International travel may be required. Straight time overtime, 9/80 work schedule (every other Friday off), and/or 1 day of telework per week may be available**

Duties And Responsibilities

Some of your major responsibilities will include:

  • Research, develop, and test technologies for water recovery from spacecraft wastewater, including urine and humidity condensate.
  • Typical technologies include physical, chemical, and biological water processing, contaminant filtration, biocide introduction, and water quality monitoring.
  • Work in a laboratory environment with an interdisciplinary team of skilled and motivated engineers and scientists.
  • Work in a team environment and report to the project manager to provide status on progress and issues and for support.
  • Develop test plans, working with ECLSS Water Team to ensure the test strategy will provide sufficient information on the system performance and capabilities.
  • Develop test procedures and schedules, often through collaboration with various organizations across Johnson Space Center (JSC), including tasks associated with flight certification of hardware.
  • Design and build test rigs to enable hardware development test objectives.
  • Develop logistics, manufacturing and procurement plan.
  • Work with procurement personnel and vendors to order and secure procurements.
  • Inspect hardware upon receipt to verify match with fabrication drawing/models.
  • Maintain a safe working environment by performing hazard analyses and following JSC protocol.
  • Perform testing to assess performance characteristics of development hardware, which often includes chemical, mechanical, and electrical components.
  • Gather, compile, analyze, and present test results.
  • Communicate test results and development plans both orally and in writing through presentations, papers, and reports.
  • Develop project documentation and maintain status of drawings and procurements.
  • Assist project management with configuration control of project documentation.
  • Participate in requirements development, trade studies, and design reviews.
  • Develop proposals for work related to technology advancement.
  • Perform other duties as required, including but not limited to the review of technical proposals, guiding and overseeing subcontractor performance, and generating paperwork for flight hardware processing.

Qualifications

Required:

  • A BS Engineering degree from an accredited engineering school.
  • Knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures in the space hardware field, such as mechanical and electrical system design, engineering drawings and sketches, material selection, and design software and tools
  • Ability to prepare written documents and to verbally present at various meetings
  • Ability to graphically represent test results using data visualization tools such as Excel, Matlab, etc
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office products
  • Versatility of skillsets: willingness to work and learn across a variety of disciplines, including chemical, mechanical, electrical, and environmental engineering and microbiology
  • Self-motivated problem-solver
  • Team player who is adaptable to a dynamic environment and the ability to complete all assignments as required.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering and a minimum of 2-5 years of experience in the field or in a related area.
  • Familiar with JSC organizations, processes, and procedures.
  • Experience with the development of project planning documents.
  • Experience with the design, assembly, verification, testing, and operation of space hardware and/or water treatment systems.
  • Prior experience working in a system development project/program.
  • Flight demo experience.
  • Familiarity with feasibility assessments and trade studies.
  • Familiarity with testing hardware and working in a laboratory environment.
  • Co-op or Intern experience at JSC or other NASA agency.
  • Familiarity with the Engineering Life Cycle process.
  • Prior experience working and coordinating requirements with third party/outside Vendors.
  • Familiarity with NASA Quality operational procedures and requirements.
  • Willing to work off hours/alternative shifts when running tests.
  • Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position.
  • Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
  • Management has the prerogative to select at any level for which the position is advertised.
