Temporary Full Time (CUPE 136T)

Two contract positions available, lasting approximately two months

This position is responsible for performing general maintenance in harbours. Shifts for this position will be from 7:00am to 3:30pm, including the occasional weekend.
Assist with harbours boat lifting operations.
Performs litter pick up and facility checks in the parks and open space system maintained by the Town; reports any incomplete work or issues to the Lead-hand and/or Supervisor.
Collects limbs and brush; rakes; perform debris and litter pick-up from roadsides, creeks, parks, parking lots, etc.
Prepares ground by hand digging, raking and laying sod.
Adheres to assigned schedules of waste pickups and small litter removal.
Shovel snow and salt walkways as required.
Act as a flag person on roadways.
Maintain vehicles and equipment in a clean, tidy condition, making regular inspections and circle checks, reporting defects, etc. in a prescribed manner.
Apply safety precautions and procedures in the performance of duties and the operation of motorized equipment ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ministry of Transportation Temporary Conditions for Road Work, standard operating procedures and policies of the Town of Oakville.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum of Grade 12 education or acceptable equivalent in education and experience. Previous related experience in parks maintenance and related equipment.
The successful candidate must hold and provide a copy of a valid and unrestricted Ontario Driver's License Class G minimum, DZ is considered an asset (standard and automatic transmission) with a driving record that demonstrates responsible and safe driving behaviour. Note: Applicants with 6 or more points are ineligible for consideration. The successful applicant, who is a new hire, will be required to provide the Corporation with a current driver's abstract (no older than 30 days) and pass a Town administered road test prior to assuming the position.
Must possess an understanding of the Highway Traffic Act and knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Demonstrated mechanical aptitude, effective communication, both oral and written, customer service and problem-solving skills.
Proficient time management skills and flexibility in adjusting between a variety of duties.
Ability to work with minimal supervision and as part of a team.
Preference will be given to candidates having a minimum of 1 year's previous experience with machines and equipment used which includes: trucks, vans, tractors, loaders, mowing equipment, small hand equipment.
Must be willing to work a 40-hour workweek in varying weather conditions and be available for shift work as required. May be required to work a rotating shift, including weekend shifts.
