Developer Platforms Role at The New York Times

The New York Times is committed to seeking the truth and helping people understand the world through independent journalism. This role is part of the Developer Platforms group, focusing on building an internal developer platform to support over 60 teams and 450+ engineers in NYT Product Engineering. You will be part of the DevEx Application Delivery team, enabling engineering teams to ship code with high velocity and quality. This is a hybrid remote/in-office role, allowing employees to work from home up to three days a week.

Responsibilities

- Help develop infrastructure and observability for Continuous Integration and Continuous Deployment platform that supports hundreds of builds and deployments per day to ensure system reliability and scalability.

- Work within areas such as deployment pipeline, containerization, observability, secrets management and research, strategize and propose solutions that meet requirements, reduce friction for product engineers, and consolidate existing solutions.

- Engage with engineers across the entire department to make incremental improvements to our tech strategy and the implementation of our platform.

- Guide product feature teams on the best practices of CI/CD workflows leveraging our systems.

- Provide production support of our users, including weekly on-call rotations.

Basic Qualifications

- 3+ years of software programming (language-agnostic, but we use Go) and scripting like bash.

- 2+ years of experience running and troubleshooting workloads on Kubernetes clusters (understanding of resource management and observability).

- 2+ years of infrastructure provisioning and monitoring using Terraform and DataDog or Prometheus and with cloud services like AWS or GCP.

- 2+ years of experience working with CI/CD systems like Github Actions or Jenkins.

- Experience troubleshooting issues with users: You are motivated by helping others succeed.

Preferred Qualifications

- Hands-on experience using platforms such as Spinnaker, Harness, CodeFresh, Akuity, or ArgoCD.

- Experience in prompt engineering or leveraging GenAI tools like Copilot, Cursor, or Claude Code.

The annual base pay range for this role is between $110,000 — $130,000 USD.
