Operations Communication Specialist

In order to be considered for this position, candidate must be serving permanently in the title of Operations Communications Specialist, or have filed for civil service exam #5098 (provide proof of filing), or be eligible under the 55a program. The Department of Transportations (DOT) mission is to provide for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods in the City of New York and to maintain and enhance the transportation infrastructure crucial to the economic vitality and quality of life of our primary customers, City residents. Under direct supervision, the selected candidate will monitor radio frequencies, answer radio calls in the prescribed manner, transmit information to field personnel, permittees, and office personnel as dictated in the standard operating procedures; records, tracks and responds to telephone calls, emails and other related inquiries accurately logging transmissions as necessary; coordinates inter-agency and intra-agency responses to incidents and emergencies, by phone/email. Forwards unresolved matters to appropriate staff and offices for further action. Performs accurate data entry and retrieval on various systems. Create comprehensive and accurate incident descriptions, and collects accurate location information. Makes visual inspection of all operating equipment or arrange to have maintenance done by designated personnel. Participate in training sessions as necessary. May be required to work unscheduled or extended hours as needed; performs related tasks as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. Six months of full-time satisfactory experience operating two-way radio equipment involving the extensive receiving, logging and sending or radio transmissions in English (Citizen Band radio experience is not acceptable); or 2. Six months of full-time satisfactory experience as a telephone dispatcher involving the extensive receiving, logging and sending of messages in English (telephone operator experience is not acceptable). Special Note To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II, individuals must have at least two years of experience in Assignment Level I.

Preferred Skills:

Preference will be given to candidate who has intermediate to advance computer skills related to MS Office Suite and very good communication, organization and writing skills.

Residency Requirement:

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.
