CERT IT ADMINISTRATOR (DB) - 13644
The nation's leading local health department is seeking a Project Management professional to join the Database Administration team and support data-driven public health IT initiatives. The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) employs modern, enterprise-level technologies to improve operational efficiency and advance its mission of protecting and promoting the health of all New Yorkers. Duties will include but not limited to:
- Support the Director of Database Administration by assisting with planning, coordination, tracking, and reporting of database administration activities across production and non-production SQL Server environments (SQL Server 2016 2022).
- Assist in the day-to-day oversight and monitoring of a large-scale enterprise database environment consisting of 60+ servers and 1,500+ databases, ensuring operational stability and service continuity.
- Act as a liaison between DBA teams, application development, infrastructure, network operations, and divisional IT units to facilitate communication, gather requirements, and support timely delivery of database-related initiatives.
- Coordinate and track database change requests and deployments, ensuring proper approvals, documentation, scheduling, and adherence to change management processes.
- Assist with coordination of backup, recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery activities, including documentation, validation, and status reporting. Assist in the development and documentation of standard operating procedures, workflows, and best practices for database administration activities.
- Monitor dashboards, alerts, and incident reports; track production issues, outages, and remediation activities, escalating as needed and ensuring follow-up actions are completed.
- Coordinate after-hours and weekend support coverage, including scheduled maintenance and emergency response activities.
- Support process improvement initiatives by helping identify opportunities for automation, efficiency gains, and risk reduction in DBA operations.
- Effectively collaborate with architecture, application development, requirements group, QA, testing and PM teams.
- Work with Audit/Compliance teams to install and maintain MS SQL security updates and patches.
- Manage trouble and request queues ensuring timely resolution.
- Provide expert support, analysis, and research into exceptionally complex problems.
- Assist with analysis, evaluation, and preparation of recommendations for system improvements, optimization, development, and/or maintenance efforts.
- Monitor status of critical system services reporting performance and server health.
Preferred skills:
- 5+ years of hands-on database administration experience in a SQL server environment.
- Demonstrated expertise in writing T-SQL scripts for tables, keys, constraints, indexes, views. triggers, stored procedures, etc.
- Must have expert knowledge and hands-on experience in performing backups, restores, account permissions, installing and configuring servers, rebuilding indices, windows administration, database mirroring, etc.
- Strong experience in PowerShell scripting to automate database administration tasks.
- Strong knowledge of IT Security practices that impact the database architecture.
- Strong experience with backup and recovery procedures for all MS SQL Server database systems according to industry best practices.
- Demonstrated expertise in creating and troubleshooting SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) package.
- Demonstrated expertise in creating and troubleshooting SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) reports.
- Ability to analyze, understand, and create complex data processes.
- Ability to transform data from Oracle to SQL Server is a plus.
- Experience translating business requirements to technical specifications and database designs.
- Ability to work well in a team environment.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Strong desire to keep up to date on latest technology trends.
