Protective Services Corporal

The Protective Services Corporal provides frontline leadership and operational support to ensure a safe, secure, and orderly environment for patients, visitors, team members, medical staff, and Novant Health property. This role performs high-visibility patrols, responds to emergency and non-emergency incidents, and enforces applicable laws, policies, procedures, and Novant Health standards of professional conduct. The Corporal exercises sound judgment during routine and high-risk situations, utilizes nonviolent crisis intervention techniques, and supports clinical teams during patient safety events, including physical interventions and restraints when appropriately directed. The position conducts preliminary investigations, prepares accurate and timely reports, and coordinates with law enforcement and judicial partners as required, including court testimony when applicable. This role also supports access control, emergency response, and public safety operations while modeling professionalism, accountability, and service excellence in a healthcare environment.

Internal Eligibility Requirement: Applicants must be currently employed for one year in a Protective Services Officer II or a Police Officer II role at Novant Health at the time of application.

Qualifications, Licensure & Certifications

Education: High school diploma or GED, required.

Experience: Two (2) years of healthcare public safety, protective services, or policing experience, preferred.

Experience aligned with Novant Health Life Support Training Policy (NH-HR-3096).

Licensure & Certifications: IAHSS Basic and/or Advanced Training Certification, required within 12 months of hire.

If sworn: Must meet requirements in accordance with NC General Statutes Chapter 74E and be commissioned as a Company Police Officer, required.

NC State–approved restrictive intervention curriculum (facility specific), required within 3 months of hire.

Completion of Protective Services Senior Leadership–approved specialized training, such as: Reid's Interview and Investigation Course, and/or NC Training & Standards Field Training Officer (FTO) Certification Required.

Additional Skills & Requirements

BLS/CPR certification, required within 90 days of hire.

Ability to qualify for and maintain a NC Private Protective Services Board Armed Security Officer Registration Permit, per Novant Health training and qualification standards.

Demonstrated public contact and customer service experience.

Successful completion of all required organizational, departmental, field, and in-service training, including emergency management courses (e.g., decontamination, hazardous materials awareness).

Basic computer proficiency.

Ability to complete department-specific skills validation and competency testing.

Ability to effectively communicate via radio and telephone.

Ability to prepare clear, accurate, and complete written reports.

No criminal record.

Maintain a valid driver's license in the state of residence.

Compliance with the Novant Health Vehicle Use, Requirements & Guidelines Policy.

Immediate notification to leadership of any motor vehicle–related charges or criminal complaints.
