About The Role

The Director, Perioperative Services is responsible for providing oversight for designated operational and leadership activities in the following areas within the assigned departments: practice, quality, efficiency, operations, budget planning and management, project management facility interfaces, as well as internal and external communications. The Director for Perioperative Services assists in the patient care delivery system development and operations across clinical enterprise, collaborating effectively with staff, physicians and other members of the health care team. The position provides cohesive management, supervision, and leadership in the assigned areas of services by closely communicating with staff, Medical Directors, Physicians and other system leaders, implementing the visions and directions provided by them and advising them of plans and initiatives based on clinical experience and knowledge in services and day to day observations in the areas.

The Director, Perioperative Services has strategic and executive responsibilities for perioperative and endoscopic operations. Organizationally, the Director, Perioperative Services is accountable to the Executive Director, Perioperative Services for assuring effective use of allocated resources in achieving institutional mission, goals, core values and strategic initiatives. The Director, Perioperative Services is charged with structuring and directing operational areas to assure effective service delivery and desired patient outcomes.

Minimum Job Qualifications

  • Licensure or other certifications: Current RN license or temporary permit in Georgia. Certification in related Nursing specialty or ability to obtain within twelve (12) months of hire.
  • Educational Requirements: Bachelors Degree.
  • Minimum Experience: A minimum of five (5) to ten (10) years experience in practice of professional nursing with five (5) years experience in progressive Perioperative leadership is required.

Essential Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Ensures that the areas within his/her space of control are meeting and/or exceeding external benchmarks of performance.
  • Implements strategies collaboratively with direct reports to achieve objectives.
  • Ensures the annual evaluation of current department objectives and participates in establishing objectives for the next fiscal year.
  • Analyzes and monitors operational performance of assigned departments.
  • In collaboration with staff, department and system leaders, leads, designs and implements efforts to improve operational performance.
  • Provides project management leadership as needed and assigned.
  • Ensures that the principles of patient and family centered care are incorporated into the operations and seeks opportunities to bring the voice of the patient into service designs.
  • Ensures accountability and responsibility for quality nursing care delivery in the perioperative clinical areas according to established nursing standards of care.
  • Enhances operational effectiveness, emphasizing cost containment without jeopardizing patient care priorities, improvement, innovation or quality of care.
  • Analyzes and evaluates the delivery of nursing care in the perioperative areas to ensure compliance with nursing standards.
  • Ensures targets for improvements in patient services, productivity and cost management are met.
  • Assists in new program/service development from an operational perspective.
  • Manages and provides status reports on a regular basis to the Executive Director, Perioperative Services regarding projects being considered or implemented in the areas of responsibility.
  • Participates in the implementation of the annual strategic plan for the Health System.
  • Ensures that problems, complaints and policy violations are investigated and appropriate action taken to resolve the issue.
  • Contributes to the establishment of a learning environment. Provides training and staff development through ongoing in-services. Maintains a formal course of development in perioperative and endoscopic trainees, technicians and support staff.
  • Maintains knowledge of, observes and enforces safety measures in Environment of Care.
  • Contributes to the institutional knowledge of the latest trends, practices and state-of the art technology as applicable to assigned areas of responsibility. Ensures that areas of responsibility are managed according to industry best practices, regulatory standards, DNV standards, etc.
  • Maintains a continuous physical presence within the service areas and responds to requests for assistance. Promotes teamwork. Demonstrates a high level of productivity and dependability.
  • Creatively identifies opportunities for improvement in all aspects of the service areas.
  • Facilitates patient flow, communication and problem resolution. Develops plans and policies for efficient workflow to improve quality and productivity. Develops and implements policies and programs. Serves as resource and role model for staff.
  • Develops clinical protocols for procedures in assigned areas of responsibility. Identifies appropriate internal controls for department; provides mechanisms to monitor and enforce compliance.
  • Ensures that departments operate within the approved budget as indicated by actual statistical reports allowing for variables in case types, supply requirements and emergency needs.
  • Ensures that all unit equipment is adequately maintained as demonstrated by lack of case downtime. Participates in selection and purchase of equipment, monitors status of equipment repairs and preventative maintenance, gathers data on equipment malfunction and associated down time.
  • Ensures cost-effective use of supplies through control of lost charges. Monitors capital expenditures against budget and regularly reconciles areas of responsibility. Participates in the development of a 5 year capital plan for assigned departments.
  • Works collaboratively with the Executive Director, Perioperative Services to project and prepare annual operating budgets. Monitors financial and statistical performance against budgeted targets. Provides direction to department managers, facilitating the development of plans to enhance revenue production while decreasing cost and inefficiencies.
  • Facilitates collaboration between departments and other hospital departments and the medical staff to provide quality patient care.
  • Establishes strong collaborative relationships with members of the Health system leadership team, peers, GME leadership, Business and Finance leadership and other constituencies throughout the organization.
  • Assists in the execution of operationally focused tactics of business plans. Participates, as appropriate, in service line activities in collaboration with other institutional leaders. Develops a process to ensure timely communications to stakeholders about the status of projects being planned/implemented. Monitors performance of services and departments against plan goals.
  • Provides a high standard of customer service to our staff, administration, physicians and representatives of the organization and community.
  • Oversees human resource management within areas of responsibility. Mentors staff and objectively evaluates and documents performance, taking corrective action as appropriate. Assures the completion of employee performance evaluations.
  • Achieves performance outcomes through engagement of the staff and perioperative leadership. Assures effective staffing and optimal human resource performance. Continuously monitors staffing levels and adjusts as appropriate to meet various patient care and financial objectives. Encourages and supports staff development.
  • Consistently keeps facility Executive Director, Perioperative Services and Periop Triad informed of changes in or affecting the perioperative areas.
  • Ensures that job descriptions for the perioperative areas are reviewed/revised at least annually. Oversees license renewal for all licensed personnel in the designated units.
  • Exercises a high degree of initiative, judgment, discretion and decision making to achieve institutional and departmental missions. Identifies and resolves problems with minimal direction. Organizes work and delegates appropriately to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Maintains daily communications with Unit Directors and other necessary personnel. Demonstrates ability to positively implement and manage change while directing the problem solving process.
  • Assesses situations regarding intervention and takes appropriate action, keeping appropriate persons informed. Demonstrates strategic thinking, planning and problem solving skills
