This posting is for an Engineering Technician III position in the Division 6 Cumberland Maintenance Unit. This is an advanced level position. The duties of this position will include reviewing and inspecting driveway permits, encroachments, subdivisions, and roadway additions/abandonments; monitoring and inspecting contractors performing various work for the department; managing long arm mowing contractors; assisting with snow and ice plans and execution; managing maintenance of guardrail and other traffic barrier systems on the state highway system; monitoring and inspecting erosion control measures on projects; assisting highway maintenance crews by providing technical expertise; and enforcing standards for utilities working in the state right-of-way.
The selected applicant is expected to have a working knowledge of the department standards, specifications, and procedures to ensure compliance when performing inspection duties. This position may also be involved in generating highway maintenance plans; communicating with citizens, contractors, and developers; coordinating rental and purchase order agreements; and performing highway maintenance activities when needed. This position is subject to emergency call back for wrecks, emergencies, inclement weather, and other necessary work outside of normal hours.
Additional Expectations: Position will be expected to obtain and hold various certifications including but not limited to NCDOT QMS Roadway technician and NCDOT Erosion Control Level II: Site Manager. The position will be expected to have knowledge and skill in using office computer software. Must have the ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards including highway traffic, extreme weather, and traversing rough terrain. Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety-toed shoes required.
Associate's degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
