This position reports to the District Engineer for the District 1 Office in Halifax County and will function as a lead project inspector conducting independent complex inspections of larger driveway permits and encroachments; reviews safety and environmental related items and will supervise lower level inspectors performing routine to moderately complex inspections of roadway and utility construction processes and materials to assure compliance with contract agreements, standards and specifications. Safety shoes required.

The selected candidate for this position must be able to evaluate and apply engineering judgement to plan interpretation; establish and maintain positive lines of communication between technicians, engineers, contractors, and public. Traverse rough terrain in evaluating highway construction. Apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. Must have the ability to work in close proximity of high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment as well as accurately maintain daily records of work accomplished. Must be legally able to operate a state vehicle.

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC09 $41,206- $72,113

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience conducting independent, moderately complex inspections, with limited supervision
  • Skill in evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures
  • Experience in maintaining neat, legible and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry
  • Demonstrated ability to lead co-workers on assigned tasks
  • Experience in utilizing applications (apps) on iPads and computer programs.

Associate's degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
