The primary purpose of the Location & Surveys Unit is to provide statewide engineering and geomatics analysis in the development of transportation facilities and acquisition of property in accordance with the best professional engineering and surveying practices consistent with all laws and regulations governing the State Highway System. We are looking for an Engineering Technician I who will be responsible for technical work supporting higher level technicians or engineers in route location surveying. The successful applicant must perform a full range of calculations and computations. This position is subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions. In this role you will perform:

  • A wide variety of standardized and non-standardized tasks and assignments in compiling, analyzing, computing, editing, and processing field data work as a part of an engineering survey crew under the supervision of higher-level technicians or engineers.
  • Basic field or office technical assignments in connection with highway route location surveys of projects.
  • A variety of survey instrument operations and/or CADD and computer operations in the surveying and creation of plan sheets and survey data including hydraulic surveys, complex horizontal alignments and setting photogrammetric controls, property condemnation and Global Positioning System (GPS) field work.
  • Operation of Electronic Engineering Survey Equipment.
  • Operation of CADD equipment.
  • Courthouse research.
  • Steps to maintain safety of self and worksite.

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC07 $37,377 – $65,408

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Experience communicating technical information verbally, clearly, and accurately to varied audiences, including via handheld radio.
  • Experience performing basic internet skills such as online property searches.
  • Experience performing basic skills in math including geometry, trigonometry, and algebra.
  • Experience accurately following oral and/or written procedures and instructions.
  • Experience working as a member of a team in less complex assignments such as collecting DTM data or photogrammetric and topographical features in the field for plan sheet preparation.

Associate's degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
