This posting is for an Engineering Specialist I located in the Division 9 Winston-Salem Construction 2 Unit. The position will serve as Lead Project Inspector in the Winston Salem Construction 2 Resident Engineer's Office, supporting higher level engineers in the administration of large complex highway construction projects. Duties include conducting independent moderate to complex inspections, sampling and testing of materials, analysis of engineering-related data to ensure conformance to specifications and contractual provisions, supervising and assisting in training lower-level technicians- including NCDOT employees as well as Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) staff, and assigning daily project inspection duties to lower-level technicians. Additional duties will include monitoring contractor progress to ensure timely completion of the projects, monitoring contractor compliance with subcontractors and DBE and Title VI Compliance, resolving daily constructability issues on projects, and highway construction surveying and layout.

Experience using computers or electronic tablets and ability to adapt to changes in technology. Good communication skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, contractor personnel, and the public. Ability to work independently to make engineering decisions. Employee will be expected to apply NCDOT safety standards and program to operations. Employee may be exposed to hazards including construction equipment, high traffic volumes, and heights over water or traffic. Employee will be expected to work outside in varying temperature and weather conditions. Employee will be expected to perform moderate physical activity, such as standing, walking, climbing, kneeling, and be able to lift 50 pounds. Employee may be required to work nights, weekends, holidays and extended hours as required by project workload/staffing on any assigned project in Division 9. Must be able to legally drive a state vehicle. Safety toe shoes are needed for this position.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Associate's degree in an applicable area of engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of progressive technician experience; or High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and eight years of progressive technician experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
