This position will be filled at either an Engineered System Technician level 2 or 3 depending on the skills of the selected candidate. The Mechanical Design Engineering Group in Accelerator Operations and Technology Division (AOT-MDE) is made up of mechanical engineers, designers, technicians, and administrative staff whose mission is to provide mechanical engineering support to a wide variety of accelerator technology related challenges in the service of the laboratory's national security mission. AOT-MDE's primary responsibility is the operation and maintenance of the LANSCE Accelerator Facility's mechanical systems. Mechanical Diagnostics Team is one of the four mechanical systems responsible for approximately two hundred electro-mechanical diagnostic devices, about thirty different types such as wire scanners for beam profile measurements, beam current monitors, beam emittance measurement slit and collectors, beam plugs, beam deflectors, stripper foils, and diffusers. These devices provide the beamline data to safely operate the LANSCE accelerator. Each device is a complex assembly made of hundreds (more or less) of small and precise mechanical and electrical components.
We are seeking a highly self-motivated and mechanically inclined Engineered Systems Technician to be a member of the Mechanical Diagnostics Team. The successful candidate will troubleshoot, maintain, repair and rebuild the mechanical and electrical systems of the devices to support accelerator operations and a variety of other accelerator related projects. They will need to demonstrate the ability of following instructions closely and calling supervisor or senior technician when in doubt; working closely with personnel from within and outside the team and a group; interacting and communicating effectively with others; staying highly focused and productive for a long period of time; prioritizing safety of self and others; working independently and as part of the team under both general and/or specific instructions. This position involves supporting LANSCE 24-hours, 7-days per week beam operation, which will involve work at odd hours (when required) and on-call duties. The successful candidate must be willing to work overtime occasionally and serve on-call to support 24/7 accelerator operation and maintenance.
For full consideration applicants must submit a resume and a comprehensive cover letter that addresses the Minimum and Desired requirements of the position.
Engineered Systems Technician 2 ($53,700.00 -$82,500.00)

On a routine basis and under detailed directions from the team leader or senior technician, the candidate will, with their fellow technicians, troubleshoot, repair and rebuild the electro-mechanical devices. The responsibilities include but not limited to assembling mechanical parts looking at the mechanical and electrical interactions and drawings, wiring the necessary cables and wires, soldering the electrical equipment, machining parts needed, rebuilding the devices, adjusting the tolerances on the machine shop made parts, looming the micron level carbon fibers to mount the stripper micron level, extremely delicate fibers and able to communicate effectively with scientists, engineers and technicians within and outside the group.
Engineered Systems Technician 3 ($64,700.00 -$101,400.00)
The successful candidate has demonstrated "skilled/fully proficient/journeyman level" knowledge and skills on all the responsibilities as mentioned for Tech 2. In addition to that, the technician at this level is expected to be able to perform with minimum supervision from a senior technician and/or team leader. The successful candidate is expected to be able to perform leak checks on the rebuilt devices and for other teams within the group.
