In this position, successful candidates will apply the principles and theories of engineering, mathematics, and science to solve technical problems in support of engineering projects and research. They will plan and execute complex assignments requiring initiative, sound judgment, and technical expertise. Responsibilities include facility design, operation, maintenance, project execution, and/or research-based engineering. Candidates must work effectively both independently and collaboratively, using engineering and computer tools to deliver efficient, accurate, and high-quality results while continuously improving processes to meet customer needs. Safety and security are a primary responsibility; employees must ensure compliance, maintain training, and stop work if continuing is unsafe or compromises security. The technologist will plan and schedule detailed phases of engineering work, resolve design and coordination issues, and apply professional concepts to develop creative, effective solutions. They will prepare specifications and evaluations, conduct technical research, and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, and contractors. The role may include leading or mentoring staff, supporting project controls and estimates, and ensuring adherence to established engineering policies and Laboratory standards. In addition to the responsibilities outlined for Level 3, the technologist at this higher level will collaborate with junior and senior engineers to deliver integrated, full-system design solutions through mentorship and technical leadership. They will support and lead research and engineering initiatives that demand innovation, independence, and expert judgment. The Technologist 4 will independently plan and execute detailed phases of engineering work, leading efforts that address complex or unique technical challenges requiring advanced insight. They will develop new methods, techniques, and solutions across related disciplines, exercising significant latitude in determining objectives, priorities, and procedures. The incumbent initiates and reviews work for self and others, provides technical oversight, and coordinates multidisciplinary engineering efforts with clients, suppliers, contractors, and internal partners.

Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.
Work Environment: Work in a noisy environment, work near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, working overtime or an irregular schedule.
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.
