Engineering Technologist

In this position, successful candidates will apply the principles and theories of engineering, mathematics, and science to solve technical problems in support of engineering projects and research. They will plan and execute complex assignments requiring initiative, sound judgment, and technical expertise. Responsibilities include facility design, operation, maintenance, project execution, and/or research-based engineering. Candidates must work effectively both independently and collaboratively, using engineering and computer tools to deliver efficient, accurate, and high-quality results while continuously improving processes to meet customer needs. Safety and security are a primary responsibility; employees must ensure compliance, maintain training, and stop work if continuing is unsafe or compromises security. The technologist will plan and schedule detailed phases of engineering work, resolve design and coordination issues, and apply professional concepts to develop creative, effective solutions. They will prepare specifications and evaluations, conduct technical research, and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, and contractors. The role may include leading or mentoring staff, supporting project controls and estimates, and ensuring adherence to established engineering policies and Laboratory standards. The successful candidate will foster a respectful, inclusive, and collaborative work environment.

In addition to the responsibilities outlined for Level 3, the technologist at this higher level will collaborate with junior and senior engineers to deliver integrated, full-system design solutions through mentorship and technical leadership. They will support and lead research and engineering initiatives that demand innovation, independence, and expert judgment. The Technologist 4 will independently plan and execute detailed phases of engineering work, leading efforts that address complex or unique technical challenges requiring advanced insight. They will develop new methods, techniques, and solutions across related disciplines, exercising significant latitude in determining objectives, priorities, and procedures. The incumbent initiates and reviews work for self and others, provides technical oversight, and coordinates multidisciplinary engineering efforts with clients, suppliers, contractors, and internal partners.

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Expert knowledge of computer-aided drafting techniques, CAD modeling, and design
  • Expert knowledge of complex mathematical formulas and computations
  • Expert knowledge of engineering work planning and control methods
  • Expert knowledge of engineering principles and technical responsibilities within the designated discipline
  • Expert knowledge of relevant Laboratory procedures, standards, and guides
  • Expert knowledge of industry, regulatory, and DOE/NNSA codes, standards, and criteria pertinent to the discipline

Additional Job Requirements for Engineering Technologist 4:

  • Advanced-level expertise in the principles and theories of engineering, mathematics, and science applied to unique or complex problems
  • Demonstrated experience leading or mentoring others in technical areas or project subgroups

Education/Experience at lower level:

  • Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level:

  • Position requires a Bachelor' Degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Science, Math or related degree from an accredited institution and 12 years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience developing innovative engineering solutions or tools that improve efficiency or performance
  • Demonstrated success in mentoring or training junior staff
  • Proficiency with emerging analytical, modeling, or simulation software beyond standard CAD and industrial control tools
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for coordination across disciplines and with external partners
  • Experience in research-based engineering environments or national laboratory settings
  • Knowledge of advanced DOE/NNSA engineering directives, design codes, and compliance frameworks
  • Proven ability to identify process improvements and implement solutions that enhance safety, quality, or efficiency

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): General Physical Mobility, standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending. Specific Physical Mobility use of both hands, use of both arms, use of both legs, use of both feet, carry/lift to 20 pounds.

Work Schedule: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Work Environment: Work in a noisy environment, work near sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, work near machinery with moving parts, working overtime or an irregular schedule.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

  • Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2.   • Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad. *Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
  • HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, ยง712.11. These requirements include ongoing drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.
  • New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
