Distribution Planning Engineer

Location: Albuquerque, NM, United States

Under general supervision, the engineer is responsible for the following:

Perform system power flow modeling and analytics of the electric distribution system using electrical distribution system models in software such as Synergi, ASPEN Oneliner or other related products.

Identify distribution and substation enhancements and expansions to address evolving system needs or emergent issues.

Evaluate interconnection requests for solar PV, battery storage, and other Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and assess system impacts and recommend needed mitigations.

Evaluate customer service requests such as new loads or upgrades and conduct studies and provide service recommendations.

Support regulatory filings and grid modernization initiatives or other PNM plans and programs.

Ensure compliance with utility standards, safety regulations, and state/federal rules (IEEE, NESC, FERC/NERC) as applicable.

Provide technical support and direction to field personnel and contractors, and training to less experienced staff, as needed.

Communicate engineering ideas, recommendations and evaluations to diverse internal and external audiences.

Apply engineering expertise to improve or develop new standards and new technology solutions.

Competencies:

Demonstrated problem-solving skills, organization, and attention to detail.

Ability to synthesize complex or diverse information, collect and research data, and design workflows and procedures.

Experience in distribution planning modeling software such as Synergi, CYME is preferred.

Ability to translate electrical theory and physics to utility application for improving system reliability - including modeling and analytics capability and experience with power flow, voltage drop, short circuit, and reliability analyses.

Ability to resolve meter or other modeling data irregularities in coordination with other relevant technical areas.

Ability to understand and represent modern technologies applicable in the distribution and substation environment, especially grid modernization technologies.

Ability to write, review and maintain technical software, data sets, and documents - for example databases, process documents, procedures and other modeling documentation.

Ability to read, interpret and apply national, state and local codes and standards (IEEE, ANSI, NEC, NESC, ACI, AISC, ASME, NACE, etc.).

Demonstrated leadership skills, self-motivation, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to perform all work in a safe and timely manner.

Ability to work as part of a team with various departments and levels of personnel.
