Engineered Systems Tec 2 ($53,700-$82,500): Use your maintenance skills to support our national security mission! Prototype Fabrication (PF) is seeking a qualified Maintenance Technician to join the division's Integrated Logistics & Asset Management (PF-ILAM) team. As a member of the PF-ILAM Maintenance team, you will provide machine system life cycle support including the preventative maintenance (PM) and corrective maintenance (CM) for complex machine tools located within eight manufacturing facilities that are critical in support of the laboratory's mission and core weapons and scientific programs. The technician will also perform new machine installations, upgrades and retrofits, as well as maintaining advanced technology for on-machine measurements of cutting tools and part geometry.
Engineered Systems Tec 3 ($64,700-$101,400): Take your technical expertise to the next level-and make an impact where it matters. Building on the responsibilities of the Tec 2 role, the Engineered Systems Technician 3 position requires deeper technical knowledge and hands-on experience, particularly in maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinery and high-precision manufacturing systems. At this level, you will serve as a subject matter expert in CNC system maintenance, including multi-axis machining centers, mill-turns, and other advanced manufacturing platforms. You'll lead complex troubleshooting efforts, contribute to root cause analyses, and collaborate with engineering and operations teams to improve equipment uptime and performance. You will also support the integration of cutting-edge technologies such as on-machine tool and part measurement systems, mission critical maintenance, and advanced diagnostics. This position is ideal for an experienced technician who thrives in a mission-driven environment and is passionate about solving technical challenges that directly support national security objectives.

Technical Knowledge:
We are open to candidates with either a mechanical or electrical background. However, the successful candidate must be willing and able to work across both disciplines. While expertise in one area is expected, a willingness to learn and perform tasks in the other is essential. Experience performing both preventive and corrective maintenance on complex mechanical and/or electromechanical equipment. Skilled in troubleshooting, repair, and installation of CNC machine tools or similar industrial machinery, including components such as ballscrews, linear rails, gearboxes, motors, servos, and various hydraulic or pneumatic systems. Skilled in diagnosing and repairing control and electrical systems, including PLCs, servo drives, CNC controls, low- and high-voltage systems, and a variety of sensors. Ability to read and interpret ladder logic diagrams, electrical schematics, and mechanical drawings.
Customer Support & Team Dynamics:
Ability to work independently as well as demonstrated experience working in a team environment with the ability to leverage ingenuity, creativity, and personal independence to support multiple, ongoing team tasks amidst programmatic priorities. Demonstrated experience with time management, organizational skills and effective verbal and written communication. Training/Certifications:
You must have the ability to acquire and maintain pertinent certifications, such as Radiological Worker II, Beryllium Worker, forklift operator and crane operator. The employer will support the selected candidate through these training and certification programs.
Additional Job Requirements for Engineered Systems Tec 3:
In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level (Level 3) also requires the following: Working knowledge and experience with preventative and corrective maintenance tasks on a variety of manual and CNC lathes, mills and other 480V industrial machine tools. You will assist senior technicians to perform moderately complex installations, maintenance, and repairs on equipment and subsystems. Working experience supporting the maintenance of electrical and mechanical systems. You will apply your knowledge and skills in the operation of diagnostic equipment and measuring devices to assist senior technicians in developing and executing solutions to more complex technical issues and independently develop solutions to routine technical problems of moderate scope and complexity. You will maintain documentation for installations and/or repairs using established databases.
Education/Experience at Level 2:
Position requires a high school diploma and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Education/Experience at Level 3:
Position requires an Associates' Degree in a related field and a minimum of 3 years of related experience, OR an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Work Location:
The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment:
Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
