Equipment Shop Supervisor

This position announcement is for a full time Equipment Shop Supervisor located in the General Services department. The incumbent plans, schedules, and supervises maintenance and repair of diesel-powered construction equipment, motor vehicles, and related equipment/automotive systems. Performs related duties as required. This announcement will be used to fill day and evening shift opportunities. Typical Duties

  • Supervises all employees in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and equipment to include assigning the work and ensures it is completed correctly and efficiently, evaluates performance, maintains time and attendance, trains, and counsels as needed.
  • Schedules and directs repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and related equipment as well as inspects and diagnoses maintenance and repair related problems.
  • Inspects work in progress and re-inspects upon completion.
  • Monitors work performed by comparison of time used against acceptable standards.
  • Advises mechanics on the most difficult repair problems.
  • Performs routine administrative duties and provides detailed reports on shop functions with a good working knowledge of effective supervisory techniques.
  • Reviews and approves work orders for every vehicle being repaired.
  • Communicates shop parts needs.
  • Conducts safety training programs and enforces safety regulations, attends seminars and training as needed.
  • Ensures a safe working environment using a working knowledge of OSHA laws, occupational hazards, and preventive safety measures.
  • Diagnoses complex mechanical problem and determine appropriate maintenance and repair work.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent and five (5) years of experience repairing and maintaining motor vehicles and/or equipment including two (2) years supervising employees. OR Completion of Automotive Repair studies from an accredited trade school and three (3) years of experience repairing motor vehicles and/or equipment including two (2) years supervising employees.

LICENSES REQUIRED: Valid Driver License. Must obtain a "Class A" Commercial Driver License with required endorsement(s) within twelve (12) months of obtaining the position.

Note: Per Metro Ordinance No. SO94-1078. All employees of the Metropolitan Government shall be residents of the State of Tennessee or become residents of the state within six (6) months of employment as a prerequisite to employment with the Metropolitan Government.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Experience using tools and equipment to service motor vehicles and diesel powered and heavy construction equipment
  • Knowledge of the techniques and methods used to repair and maintain gasoline/diesel vehicles or equipment
  • Knowledge of the theory, operation, and maintenance of internal combustion engines, transmissions, carburetors, and related systems
