Surgical Services Support Technician

It's more than a career, it's a calling MO-SSM Health Saint Louis University Hospital 1201 Grand Worker Type: PRN Job Highlights: This position is PRN with variable hours. Work 2 to 4 on call shifts a month and must be available to work 4 shift a month. This position also requires some weekends. This position does NOT require a surgical tech certification. Job Summary: Performs a variety of technical, environmental and patient care duties under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. Duties are within the preparation, delivery and cleanup of patient care during the pre-operative, intra-operative and post-operative phases. Performs a variety of patient care duties under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse. These duties are performed in accordance with established hospital and nursing policy and within the legal scope of practice for the unlicensed caregiver. The Surgical Services Support Tech is also responsible for cleaning, disinfecting, and housekeeping functions that meets established standards of infection control and insures an environment that is conducive to patient care and is able to do quality work without close supervision. Provides direct patient care under the direction of the nurse. Assists in the preparation of the room for surgery, and with preparation of instruments when needed. Assists in case cart preparation and supply management.

Job Responsibilities and Requirements

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES AND PERFORMANCE CRITERIA (% of time) Essential Functions: The following are essential job accountabilities:

  1. I. Patient care responsibilities (25%) Criteria: a. Assists OR room staff in transferring patient to OR table when necessary. b. Assists with patient care as directed by the R.N. c. Assists in positioning the patient and follows procedure for preparation of patients surgical procedures under the direction of the circulating nurse Provides support for care with ACU/PACU patients as directed by the R.N. d. Ambulates patients as directed by the R.N. e. Follows established procedures and protocols in providing direct patient care f. Makes appropriate decisions that reflect knowledge of facts and good judgement and reports actions to the R.N. g. Provides emergency assistance as required and/or directed by surgeon and/or nursing personnel.
  2. II. Operational Support Tasks (20%) Criteria: a. Assists Central Supply Techs with preparation of case carts. b. Assists the instrument room with preparation of instruments. c. Assists Supply Team with stocking and other maintenance of inventory. d. Communicates with the charge nurse regarding room status, availability and operational concerns. e. Prepare the unit for cases/procedures under the direction of the charge nurse. f. Routes non-functional equipment to proper maintenance department location for repair, noting on equipment what the malfunction appears to be.
  3. III. Responsible for cleaning and disinfecting of the operating room following infection control practices. (15%) Criteria: a. Wipes down all furniture using hospital-approved disinfectant. b. Mops floors with a hospital-approved germicidal agent, dipping mop one time into bucket and changing mop heads after each room is cleaned. c. Returns all room furniture and equipment to its proper place. d. Gathering and disposal of linen and trash. Cleans trash can receptacles inside and outside each time. e. Changes sharps containers when full. f. Cleans all equipment and removes all unneeded equipment from room to proper storage area. g. Assists in moving new equipment needed for the next procedure. h. Is able to respond to emergency cleaning needs or housekeeping requests in a positive, time-oriented manner. i. Wears appropriate personal protective equipment when cleaning. j. Cleans isolation rooms for PACU when requested.
  4. IV. Transport and courier duties. (15%) Criteria: a. Verifies patient location and identification per hospital policy. b. Transports patients following policy and procedure thru out the hospital and surgical services areas as directed. c. Checks outer corridor to see if appropriate patient transportation is ready for the patient following surgery (ICU bed or regular bed). d. Assures that each patient bed/stretcher has an oxygen tank on it. e. Assists PACU by transporting patients to the floors when necessary. f. Transports blood to and from blood bank. g. Transports specimens to pathology as needed. h. Transports equipment/supplies etc. to appropriate areas in safe and efficient manner.
  5. V. Demonstrates accountability for own professional practice (5%) Criteria: a. Adheres to all standards, policies, procedures when implementing clinical and technical aspects of care. 1. Participates in learning experiences that increase professional competence. b. Demonstrates appropriate technical and cognitive skills for area of practice. c. Is at work as scheduled and begins duties promptly at start of shift. d. Maintains currency in all hospital / unit information, communication, policies and procedures. 1. Attends staff meetings/reviews minutes when absent. 2. Reviews Hospital/Nursing publications. 3. Keeps up to date with policies and procedures. e. Demonstrates ability to change and adapt to changing work demands. 1. Responds positively to change. 2. Provides assistance and support to peers, co-workers and other team members. 3. Adapts positively to changes in unplanned work load and job demands. f. Acts rapidly and effectively during any emergency. g. Assumes responsibility for completing all mandatory requirements. 1. Maintains current certification. 2. Yearly TB screening. 3. Annual Ethics Training (Initial Ethics, if new employee). 4. Annual safety training. 5. Required information security course. 6. Required Abuse and Neglects course. 7. Annual blood borne pathogen training. 8. Coursework as assigned for .Edu. 9. Annual competency/skill day. 10. Age/Population specific competency. 11. Orientation competency (if new hire). 12. Immediate use sterilization training. 13. Appropriate specimen handling competency.
  6. VI. Practices according to safety and infection control policies (5%) Criteria: a. Practices standard precautions and disposes of hazardous wastes per established guidelines. b. Maintains a safe, clean, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families/employees in accordance with hospital standards. 1. Maintains clutter free environment. 2. Keeps conversations and background noise to a minimum. 3. Adheres to dress code. c. Reports variation from care/treatment following the occurrence reporting policy and procedure. d. Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  7. VII. Provides service excellence to the customers of Saint Louis University Hospital 5% Criteria: a. Demonstrates courtesy, compassion, and respect. 1. Provides prompt, respectful, courteous service. 2. Meets physical, spiritual, psychological, and emotional needs of patients and families. 3. Apologizes for mix-up and delay. 4. Maintains a non-judgmental attitude. 5. Respects the dignity of patients by providing privacy, comfort, and confidentiality of information. b. Communicates effectively. 1. Listens to staff/patient/family concerns and addresses needs. 2. Allows time for questions. c. Maintains a cooperative relationship with members of the medical staff. 1. Communication is timely and effective.
  8. VIII. Cost Effective Services (5%) Criteria: a. Uses resources efficiently. b. Recommends change in practice that increase efficiency and minimize waste. c. Prioritizes responsibilities. d. Utilizes non-clinical time in a constructive manner, i.e. .Edu, mandatory education requirements. e. Participates in performance/process improvement process
  9. IX. Ability to relate to coworkers in a professional manner (5%) Criteria: a. Orients and/or precepts new employees when required. b. Participates in maintaining a collaborative team approach toward work. c. Functions as a resource person to co-workers, medical staff, and other members. d. Utilizes Chain of Command effectively. e. Demonstrates ability to relate to coworkers in a professional and respectful manner, in order to assure and promote a culture of safety.

Post High School vocational/specialized training. MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Prior hospital related experience with direct patient contact. Knowledge of sterile technique, basic mechanical knowledge for trouble-shooting of equipment used in the operating room.
