Internships With Public Works Transportation Project Delivery

The Public Works Transportation Project Delivery department is seeking four non-benefit earning interns to be a part of the Design, Bridge, Construction and Planning division. Location and hours: These positions are hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Public Works Facility located at 1600 Prairie Drive in Medina, MN 55340 or in a field environment within Hennepin County, and remote as job duties require. The Public Works Facility in Medina is not accessible by public transportation. These positions will start in May/June 2026 and last until August 2026 with flexible start and end dates. Interns are scheduled to work 40 hours per week. The proposed schedule is Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with some flexibility on work schedules. When school is in session, interns may work 5-10 hours per week depending on student interest and availability. While these positions are designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

About these position types: These positions are limited duration, non-benefit earning internships. These positions are internally classified as an Intern II. Transportation Design Division

The preferred candidate will have a strong interest in transportation design. The transportation design division intern will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Support our design teams by working on CAD drawings, plan preparation, and basic engineering calculations.
  • Work with teams across the design division to support a range of engineering tasks.
  • Gain exposure to the work of Public Works and Hennepin County through field visits, job shadowing, and attending project coordination meetings with staff.
  • Develop hands-on experience within the Design division, and conclude your internship by presenting your key takeaways, newly acquired skills, and what you’ve learned throughout the experience.

Transportation Bridge Division

The preferred candidate will have a strong interest in bridge work. The transportation bridge division intern will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Become familiar with engineering plans and details to support in the development of technical drawings.
  • Develop or modify technical documents relating to bridges and retaining walls.
  • Support Hennepin County’s annual bridge inspection program.
  • Assist with quantity take-offs, cost estimates, and calculations under the close supervision of engineers, drafters, and support staff.
  • Conduct research in support of engineering documents using codes, standards, and technical drawings.

Transportation Construction Division

The preferred candidate will have a strong interest in construction and transportation. The transportation construction division intern will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Assist in construction surveying and inspection of construction activities.
  • Assist in materials testing soils investigations.
  • Assist in and check quantity calculations.
  • Enter data for computer applications and produce necessary outputs.
  • Document field activities, summarize data, and assist in routine report preparation.

Transportation Planning

The preferred candidate will have a strong interest in transportation planning, CAD work, and compiling data. The Transportation Planning intern will be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Assist with developing CAD drawings for pavement restriping concepts.
  • Compile quantity takeoffs from completed plans in preparation for year-end metrics reporting.
