Project Description

Join the Grid Innovation and Infrastructure Solutions team to support Xcel Energy and its customers in adopting and leveraging new technologies, like energy storage, microgrids, and distributed energy resources management system (DERMS). We aim to be a net-zero energy provider by 2050, providing 100% carbon-free electricity to our customers. This team in the Distribution Engineering department are engineers and leaders responsible for the conceptualization, design, project management, commissioning, and oversight of distribution microgrid and energy storage projects. We are also exploring cutting-edge technologies like DERMS to enhance grid visibility and manageability of DER, like solar, electric vehicles, and storage. We create direct impact by launching emerging technologies to conduct technological assessment and long-term viability.

Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Gain hands-on experience with all the engineering, safety, and stakeholder engagement efforts to deploy emerging technologies and integrate them with utility power systems successfully and safely.
  • Work closely with and be mentored by a lead Engineer and team who leads the deployment of these projects.
  • Learn how a modern utility operates, and help bring novel ideas and technologies from concept to reality in a truly critical and rapidly evolving industry.
  • Study project proposals, review designs, check safety considerations and hazards, lead tasks within the team, evaluate the feasibility and practical application of novel solutions, along with their supporting control, information, and communication technologies, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.

This position is for a June 1st, 2026 start. These positions may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship's initial term based on the candidate's successful performance and Xcel's business needs.

Minimum Requirements

Current student, Junior status or higher. Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Electrical Engineering. Able to commute to the service centers in Denver, CO or Minneapolis, MN. Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week) or part time during the fall (up to 20 hours a week).

Preferred Qualifications

Understanding of and interest for renewable energy and distributed energy resources, like solar panels and energy storage. Ability to consider systems and detailed solutions. Working in a team. Written and verbal communication skills.
