Building Engineer/HVACR Apprentice

Location: Minneapolis, MN

Type: Contract Contractor Work Model: Onsite Hours: Flexible; Monday–Friday. Minimum 20 hours/week during the school year and 40 hours/week when school is out of session

Overview: Seeking a building engineer/HVACR apprentice to support the maintenance, repair, and operation of HVACR and MEP systems across assigned facilities. This role offers hands-on learning alongside an experienced facilities team while assisting with routine service, troubleshooting, and customer support. Ideal for candidates looking to build technical experience in a professional facilities environment.

Responsibilities:

• Adjust HVAC systems to maintain comfort levels based on direction from the facilities operations & maintenance lead.
• Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting on HVACR equipment including chillers, boilers, AHUs, refrigeration units, exhaust systems, and cooling towers.
• Complete basic plumbing tasks (flush valves, drains, sinks, mixing valves, soldering, etc.).
• Maintain awareness of fire alarm, fire suppression, and generator systems.
• Use building automation systems to operate equipment and assist with diagnostics.
• Work with team members to resolve recurring issues and complete preventive and predictive maintenance tasks.
• Use the IWMS system to track work orders and communicate with customers.
• Maintain clean, safe, and well-functioning equipment within assigned areas.
• Respond to customer requests professionally and explain basic system issues when needed.
• Support continuous learning by sharing knowledge with team members, vendors, and fellow apprentices.

Qualifications:

• Enrollment in an accredited HVACR or facilities maintenance/operations program.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to lift 50+ pounds, move a 600-pound barrel with a dolly, climb stairs and ladders, perform full-range movements, and manipulate small components.
• Ability to distinguish colors for alarms, wiring, and system indicators.
• Preferred: Experience using basic hand tools. Strong mechanical aptitude. Interest in working in a food manufacturing facility.
