Assistant Traffic Engineer

This position is located in Bemidji, MN and has the flexibility to telework, work a hybrid schedule, or work in the office. The incumbent will be required to make a telework arrangement with their supervisor. The incumbent will be expected to work in the office as determined by policy and discussion with their supervisor.

Key Responsibilities

This position is responsible for leading and coordinating traffic engineering work in the district. Key responsibilities include:

  • Responding to a wide range of questions and concerns from the public and other stakeholders about traffic safety, congestion, and access issues.
  • Leading or supporting traffic studies and data collection related to access management, road signs, pavement markings, and safety.
  • Providing guidance and oversight on signing issues within the district.
  • Managing the Safety Management System to identify crash-prone areas, recommend improvements, and help plan safety projects.
  • Working with the Office of Freight and Commercial Vehicle Operations to develop rail-related projects and managing highway/rail crossing safety projects.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications for Engineer Senior:

  • Licensure as a professional Civil Engineer with the Minnesota Board of Architecture, Engineering, Land Surveying, Landscape Architecture, Geoscience, and Interior Design (AELSLAGID).
  • If obtaining licensure through Comity, a temporary permit from AELSLAGID must be provided to MnDOT HR prior to starting employment.

Minimum Qualifications for Engineer Graduate 2:

  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university or its equivalency as rated by NCEES/EAC.
  • A passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • Two years post-graduation civil engineering work OR
  • A Master's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited college or university or its equivalency as rated by NCEES/EAC.
  • A passing score on the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam.
  • One (1) year of post-graduate civil engineering work.
  • OR Received a passing score on the Minnesota Principals & Practices of Civil Engineering (PE) Exam.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of safety procedures, MnMUTCD and Traffic Engineering Manual, highway capacity theory and application, and Access Management Guidelines.
  • Knowledge of highway engineering theories.
  • Knowledge and application of MnDOT construction plan content and organization sufficient to direct the development of traffic plans for moderate to major scale projects.
