Facilities Services Engineer

Responsible for the operations and maintenance of HVAC and Utilities Distribution systems throughout the campus, including the monitoring and operation of the Building Automation system. This position is responsible for performing preventative and corrective maintenance as needed and responding to all emergencies in a timely manner. Also responsible for maintenance of the university's high-pressure steam boilers, chillers, and other related equipment of the Central Plant. This position will assist other Facilities Services personnel as directed.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Performs preventative maintenance on all equipment throughout all campus facilities including Central Plant.
  • Performs corrective work orders daily and completes appropriate paperwork utilizing the CMMS.
  • Performs safety checks and testing as required on sprinkler and fire pumps.
  • Maintains all mechanical rooms in a clean, orderly, and professional manner.
  • Assists contractors, vendors, and other facilities service personnel with projects, including but not limited to distributing keys and hot work permits.
  • Periodically operates all boilers and chillers in a safe manner, provided having proper licensing.
  • Completes testing of water treatment daily and takes actions accordingly.
  • Operates the building automation system, making adjustments as appropriate based on building conditions, electrical demands, and gas usage.
  • All other duties as requested.

Reporting Relationships

This position reports to the Director of Energy Management / Chief Engineer. Assists and works with all Facilities Services personnel as needed.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Key Competencies

  • Knowledge and experience with computerized building automation systems and the ability to troubleshoot system components.
  • Experience in the use of water/chemical treatment programs.
  • Knowledge and experience in the use, repairs, and maintenance of pneumatic and DDC controls.
  • Knowledge and experience in the operation, maintenance, and repairs of HVAC and refrigeration systems.
  • Must have good troubleshooting skills on mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Must be able to read blueprints.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.

Minimum Education/Experience

High School Diploma or GED equivalent. 5 years in operations and maintenance of HVAC and Utilities Distribution systems.

Preferred Education/Experience

Post-high school education/training in HVAC, refrigeration, building controls, and/or other related fields. Operations and maintenance of HVAC and Utilities Distribution systems on a higher education campus. Knowledge and experience in the operation of steam boilers. Knowledge and experience in the operation of a chiller plant. Operations and maintenance of Food Service / Kitchen Appliances. Experience with fire suppression systems. Experience with pipe fitting Minnesota Chief Class "B" License Minnesota 2nd Class "B" License

Required Licensure/Certification/Registration

Successfully pass a required criminal background check. Valid MN Driver's License or Equivalent

Working Conditions / Equipment

Requires the ability to work in a noisy environment. Ability to perform the physical demands of the job (e.g. lifting over 50 pounds, climbing and working from ladders to heights over 20 feet, working from kneeling and stooping positions). Ability to work outside during extreme weather conditions (e.g. rain, snow, freezing temperatures, heat, and humidity).

Additional Information

This is a full-time, 1.0 FTE non-exempt position which requires a minimum of 40 hours a week, 12 months a year. This position has the opportunity if the position is open, to be promoted to an Assistant Chief Engineer which includes a pay increase of $3/hr. This is at the discretion of the Director of Energy Management / Chief Engineer. Is a member of a local unionized bargaining unit. This position requires overtime during peak seasons. Occasional night and/or weekend work may be required.
