System Operations Supervisor

The Upper Peninsula Power Company (UPPCO) seeks an experienced System Operations Supervisor to join their team in Ishpeming, Michigan. This role is responsible for overseeing UPPCO's real-time, 24/7 electric operations, either directly or in collaboration with others, to ensure safe and reliable power service for customers, employees, and the public. You'll be at the heart of our electric grid, analyzing system data, making critical decisions, and coordinating with field crews during both normal operations and emergencies. You'll also play a key role in storm restoration efforts, system switching procedures, and compliance with industry regulations. This position follows a 12-hour rotating shift schedule and requires flexibility to respond to call-ins, work additional hours, and be available on holidays and weekends as needed to meet workload demands. This position offers a dynamic, fast-paced environment where your leadership and problem-solving skills will make a direct impact.

What You Will Do:

Keeping the Power Flowing

  • Monitor and manage UPPCO's electric system operations to maintain safety, reliability, and efficiency.
  • Analyze system data and make quick decisions during outages or emergencies.
  • Work closely with field crews to restore power and troubleshoot issues.
  • Develop and approve switching procedures for planned and unplanned work.
  • Ensure compliance with industry regulations from NERC, MISO, FERC, and other agencies.

Dispatching & Emergency Response

  • Provide 24/7 emergency and non-emergency dispatch for electric trouble events.
  • Communicate with field crews via radio, phone, and computer to direct response efforts.
  • Monitor weather conditions and implement storm procedures as needed.
  • Work with our call center to ensure timely and accurate customer outage communication.
  • Manage after-hours security responses at UPPCO facilities.

Team Communication & Coordination

  • Maintain clear, professional communication with employees, customers, and leadership.
  • Keep accurate records of system operations, outages, and restoration efforts.
  • Assist field personnel with equipment access and security procedures.
  • Stay up to date with ongoing training and certifications to meet industry standards.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Associate degree in a relevant discipline (Electrical Engineering, Electrical Technology), or equivalent experience preferred.
  • 3 years' experience in electric utility outage coordination, field operations, and/or switching procedures required.
  • 3 years' experience in electric utility operations preferred and ideally, in a leadership or supervisory position.
  • NERC System Operator certification (or the ability to obtain it within 1 year of hire).
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to stay calm and make sound decisions in fast-changing situations.
  • Ability to work a 12-hour rotating shift schedule, respond to call-ins as needed, and work additional hours when required.
  • Valid driver's license with ability
