Traffic Engineering Technician I

Duties:

- Performs the installation, maintenance, and repair of County traffic control, street name, and information signs.

- Troubleshoots and repairs illuminated street name signs, removes graffiti and stickers, and trims vegetation to eliminate sight obstructions.

- Inspects traffic signs for proper placement, visibility, and retro-reflectivity.

- Installs, repairs, and removes sign posts and anchoring systems.

- Conducts inventory of traffic control devices and maintains accurate records, documentation, and service requests.

- Reviews construction plans and specifications for compliance with Berrien County Road Department requirements.

- Provides support to Garage Foremen regarding right-of-way and traffic-related information.

- Prepares signage layouts and communicates with the public about sign installations near their property.

- Ensures proper traffic control and barricading while working in or near roadways.

- Operates a variety of equipment, including large sign trucks, aerial lift trucks, post drivers, hydraulic post pullers, and small machinery.

Education and Experience:

- Associate degree in engineering or related field and one year of related work or course work in the road/construction area OR

- High school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience in graphic design or sign manufacturing.

Special Requirements:

- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

- May be asked to obtain a Commercial Driver's License paid for at the department's expense.

- Will be required to complete OSHA and safety training.

- Duties will require the use of personal protective equipment and the ability to lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

- May be exposed to extreme temperatures.

Required Knowledge and Skills:

- Able to learn and apply MMUTCD standards for proper placement of barricades and signage during road and lane closures to protect motorists and pedestrians.

- Able to apply established techniques, procedures, and criteria to assigned tasks, using sound judgment in handling details and following standard methods.

- Capable of using appropriate safety equipment and adheres to all safety procedures while performing work.
