Research And Development Sound Engineer Intern

Course of Study: Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Audio Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Music Technology, Acoustics, or a related field.
Term: One-year program + Internship to begin in May and end the following May

$20 an hour (undergrad)
Qualifications:
- Current juniors or seniors planning to pursue a master's degree or students currently enrolled in a master's program
- Must be an active student for the entire length of internship
- Previous internship or work experience preferred
- Must possess a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record
Skills:
- Familiarity with audio synthesis techniques (FM, granular, etc.) and creative sound design workflows.
- Understanding of digital signal processing concepts and their applications in real-time systems.
- Experience with DAWs (Logic, Reaper, Ableton, Pro Tools, etc.) for sound design and editing.
- Exposure to spatial and immersive audio technologies such as Dolby Atmos, Ambisonics, and other immersive environments.
- Familiarity with audio middleware tools such as Audio Weaver, Audioworx, Wwise, or FMOD.
- Familiarity with audio measurement and analysis tools (REW, MATLAB, or similar).
- Basic knowledge of embedded audio hardware (amplifiers, ECUs, transducers)
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
- Effective communication and teamwork skills across disciplines (engineering, design, testing).
- *Bonus: Understanding of system architecture and signal flow in automotive or complex audio systems.
- *Bonus: Understanding or interest in automotive acoustics or audio integration is encouraged.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in the design and implementation of vehicle sound cues, including AVAS, engine sound for EVs, chimes, and functional feedback sounds.
- Support audio middleware integration and parameter tuning within embedded automotive audio systems.
- Help document and review system architecture diagrams, signal flow, and component interactions (amplifiers, DSP, ECUs, CAN/LIN communication).
- Participate in audio evaluations and acoustic data collection, including in-vehicle and lab-based testing.
- Operate measurement and diagnostic tools (e.g., B&K, Siemens, Audio Precision, or similar) for audio performance validation.
- Collaborate on sound design sessions and contribute creative input for new sonic identities that enhance the brand.
- Assist in preparing technical documentation, reports, and presentations for internal teams and external suppliers.
Summary: Gain hands-on experience working on a variety of audio-related projects focused on improving the in-vehicle experience. Specifically, assist the Sound Team in designing, evaluating, and integrating in-vehicle sound systems, including Acoustic Vehicle Alerting Systems (AVAS), ASC (interior artificial engine sounds for electric vehicles), cockpit sound cues, and immersive cabin experiences. Work with senior engineers on sound design, system testing, and prototype development, contributing to next-gen vehicle programs in the North American market.
