The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is seeking applicants for a full-time equipment technician. You will work in both field and office settings to install and maintain traffic monitoring equipment that helps MDOT design better roads!

This position will be trained to troubleshoot equipment, software, and data collection-related issues. If you are flexible and embrace challenges that may come your way, come work for us. This position is responsible for supporting MDOT's permanent traffic monitoring program through the data collection of traffic or travel information as required by the Federal Highway Administration. Various maintenance, monitoring, support, and research activities are performed out of the home office location at the State Secondary Complex. The employee sometimes works alone with minimal supervision in the field. The employee will develop the skills needed to use independent judgment to maintain, manage, and develop aspects of specific program areas that they may be assigned.

General summary of function/purpose of position:

  • Diagnose, repair, maintain, modify, test, fabricate, and program equipment used in the acquisition of highway traffic data (traffic volumes, vehicle speeds, vehicle classifications, and vehicle weights).
  • Provide assistance in daily computer operations within the Lansing shop.
  • Assist in the installation and maintenance of field-permanent traffic recorder stations, including site preparation, such as loop installation and repair, pedestal and cabinet installation, cellular communications equipment and power drops, and loop lead-in cables.
  • Assist during the annual calibration of weigh-in-motion sites, as well as provide support with Welcome Center monitoring equipment.
  • Operate a motor vehicle or vehicle/trailer combination with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more to transport equipment to job sites and in performance of weigh-in-motion site calibrations. CDL training will be provided if needed.
