Hydrographic Survey Expert

Position serves as hydrographic survey expert for the Area Office survey operations. Plans, directs, and technically supervises the work of employee(s) engaged in various survey activities. Responsibilities include analyzing and considering several possible courses of action and techniques, selecting the most appropriate procedures to ensure requirements are achieved. Works with co-workers to improve survey knowledge and skills. Works with supervisory and management personnel to ensure appropriate equipment is planned for in budgets to keep survey systems up to date with current technology. Determines the most advantageous and efficient crew project schedules and crew assignments in consideration of work operations and timely submission of work. Performs system operation calibration and date checks to ensure accuracy standards are being met. Prepares and/or reviews all required reports and records and handles all administrative work required in connection with surveys such as safety and accident reports, and progress reports. Safely and properly operates all necessary motorized and non-motorized equipment, and maintains, troubleshoots and performs minor repairs on all survey related equipment. Meets to confer with representatives of other governmental or public interest groups to obtain data necessary for surveys pertaining to navigational projects and obtain rights of entry.

GS-09: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: Performing journeyman level work serving as a system operator onboard the survey vessel responsible for conducting bathymetric data collection, assisting in the planning, organizing, coordinating, and developing methods and procedures for performing and conducting the work of the survey team. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service. OR Education: I have completed two full years of graduate school or Master's degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. Appropriate fields of study can include any of the following: engineering, construction, engineering or industrial technology, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science or mathematics. Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-08). Education FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
