Service Optimization Engineer I

This role specializes in maintaining and optimizing the middleware and application infrastructure used by Trinity Health's Home Office and Ministry Organizations. The engineer is responsible for enhancing system performance, ensuring application stability, and facilitating seamless integration between platforms. Responsibilities include tuning middleware environments, scripting automation, and resolving complex technical issues across APIs, portals, and web services. The role requires strong development skills in Java and related frameworks, as well as advanced experience with Java and Camel 4 running on the OpenShift platform and ESB integrations. Proficiency in developing and consuming REST/SOAP APIs, implementing integration patterns, and handling XML/JSON data transformations is essential. Familiarity with CI/CD tools and observability tools like ELK is highly desirable. This position plays a key role in defining operational best practices, conducting code and performance reviews, and supporting high-availability deployments through effective monitoring, alerting, and fault resolution.

The primary job responsibility of the Service Optimization Engineer I is to support and optimize financial, clinical, informational and infrastructure System/Platforms that provide business customers with optimally performing services. Additionally, a Service Optimization Engineer I collaborates with Product Engineering, Product Management and Enterprise Information Security to assure seamless transition of new products and designs to Service Optimization. The Service Optimization Engineer I serves as the operational subject matter expert, coordinating with other TIS Product Centric Organization teams; to support and optimize technology-based business solutions. This includes applications and infrastructure leveraging Trinity Enterprise Data Centers and Cloud resources (i.e., PaaS, IaaS and SaaS), serving as a platform specific technology support expert. Furthermore, the Service Optimization Engineer I serves in a lead and/or support role in the operation and optimization of platforms, products and applications within their respective teams as well as how those applications interface with other teams.

Essential functions include providing a high level of technical support of platform and product designs, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure successful deployment of any design or product, monitoring and analyzing the current state of platforms to assure performance is within pre-determined thresholds, proposing procedures and solutions which assure the team is functioning at the highest possible level at the lowest possible cost, implementing platform technology in conjunction with established platform strategy, identifying, escalating, and supporting process improvement initiatives to optimize efficiency, reliability, and quality of service, and participating in research and making recommendations on products, services, protocols and standards in support of all infrastructure procurement and development efforts.

The Service Optimization Engineer I is responsible for minimizing operational and capital costs through the reduction of inefficiencies in the environment, keeping abreast of current and best practices, participating in continuing education and seminars, performing environment capacity planning and performance monitoring on all platform hardware, assuring all hardware and software is covered by 24x7x365 maintenance contracts, serving as first level for troubleshooting and escalation of critical issues, providing 24x7x365 troubleshooting support for all teams, resolving critical issues, utilizing software and hardware tools to diagnose and resolve problems and factors affecting performance and service levels, assuring all hardware and software is performing at a fully optimized level, participating in the development, implementation and testing of installs and upgrades to existing solutions, participating in data migration and lifecycle projects, participating in disaster recovery planning and exercises, assuring documentation is maintained and meets requirements, attesting to documentation maintenance annually, accountable for the security configuration of supported solutions, overseeing implementation of security controls, governance processes, and compliance validation, responsible for supporting and translating architectural designs, and performing other duties as assigned.

The Service Optimization Engineer I maintains a working knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws/regulations, the Trinity Health Integrity and Compliance Program and Code of Conduct as well as other policies and procedures in order to assure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior.

Minimum qualifications include a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems or a related field with five (5) years’ progressive experience, with expertise in hardware, software, application, and systems engineering within specific IT discipline (i.e., as strategic planning, solution engineering, technology engineering, network management, security management, change management, application development, middleware design, information analysis, database management, project management and operations management). An equivalent combination of education will be considered. The candidate must provide technical guidance, serve as a subject matter expert, have comprehensive skills in technical documentation, DevOps and ITIL concepts, knowledge of cloud platforms or software as a service application (SaaS applications), knowledge of security concepts with hands-on experience in implementing security controls and compliance requirements, be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment, possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others, have outstanding oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, adept at multi-tasking, and ability to remain calm, helpful, and productive in all situations, including critical support situations.

Physical and mental requirements and working conditions include the ability to set and organize own work priorities and adapt to them as they change frequently, ability to work concurrently on a variety of tasks/projects in an environment that may be stressful with individuals having diverse personalities and work styles, operating in a typical office environment, ability to communicate frequently, in person and over the telephone, with others in different locations working jointly on technical issues, ability to concentrate, meet deadlines, work on several projects at the same period and adapt to interruptions, ability to comply with Trinity Health policies and procedures, and ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
