Casting Manufacturing Engineer
In this role, the Casting Manufacturing Engineer will work with Product Development and suppliers to successfully develop and launch next-generation Powertrain castings. This position requires experience in working with cross-functional teams to develop and implement complex castings. The successful candidate will apply their expertise in various casting alloys and processes, including gravity, low-pressure, and high-pressure die casting, with a direct impact on the design and processing of Powertrain castings.
Responsibilities include:
- Driving the New Model Launch of Complex Casting (NMLCC) process, enabling cross-functional teams to create specific plans for manufacturing feasible casting designs and processes.
- Documenting the NMLCC process using the Process Development Log and reporting its status through Delivery Teams.
- Providing technical support to Product Development Component Program Module Teams and coordinating casting design between Product Engineering, Machining, and external casting suppliers.
- Supporting new model program cost studies and projects.
- Developing component Manufacturing Design Specifications and Manufacturing Process Specifications, and completing Manufacturing Assessments.
- Supporting simultaneous engineering and feasibility engineering studies among product engineering, manufacturing engineering, and supplier organizations.
- Assisting in the supplier selection evaluation process and supporting Purchasing in the evaluation, development, and selection of suppliers and subcontractors.
- Providing support for casting prototype planning, process development, and scheduling.
- Ensuring on-time quality prototype delivery of new components at internal and external supplier facilities.
- Evaluating innovative and disruptive emerging processes and material technologies for potential application.
- Supporting Product Engineering in the selection and specification of component materials and test procedures.
- Supporting Purchasing with the issuance of prototype and production tooling orders.
- Assisting manufacturing plants in resolving engineering issues and achieving continuous improvement.
- Providing technical support to Purchasing involving the resolution of casting-related productivity and quality issues and the development of external casting suppliers.
Essential Skills include:
- Experience with high-pressure die casting, low-pressure die casting, gravity die casting, or sand casting.
- Supplier or vendor management experience.
- Process engineering and tooling experience.
- Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
- Working knowledge of casting, post-processing, and die development processes.
- Understanding of core making processes and materials.
- Knowledge of secondary operations associated with castings such as trimming, fettling, deburring, and quality checks.
- Familiarity with iron and aluminum alloys used for castings.
- Understanding of MagmaSoft or other casting simulation software.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and decision-making ability in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to present, persuade, and collaborate at all levels.
- Self-motivated and capable of driving change and influencing engineering decisions.
- Experience performing casting manufacturing feasibility assessments.
- Foundry operational experience in casting manufacturing processes and process control.
- Proven track record of delivering major product launches in an automotive manufacturing facility.
- Ability to work in a production setting and aid in troubleshooting supplier equipment and processes.
- Ability to travel both domestically and internationally.
Additional Skills & Qualifications:
- Bachelor of Science in Engineering; MBA/MS preferred in Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, or Metallurgy/Materials Science.
- 5+ years of prior experience with casting processes preferred.
Work Environment:
The work environment includes collaboration with cross-functional teams and suppliers to innovate and implement casting processes for Powertrain components. The role requires adaptability to a dynamic environment, with opportunities for domestic and international travel. The candidate will be expected to engage in a production setting, providing technical support and troubleshooting as necessary.
Job Type & Location:
This is a Contract position based out of Dearborn, MI.
Pay and Benefits:
The pay range for this position is $43.00 - $50.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
