Optical Systems Engineer
We're seeking an experienced Optical Systems Engineer to join our Reality Labs XDO team, where you'll play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Wearable Glasses display and imaging systems. As a key member of our team, you'll explore innovative architectures and design spaces for Wearable Glasses display systems, develop and analyze system components, and drive detailed system-level analysis. In this role, you will be part of a dynamic environment where you will consistently switch between high-level thinking and meticulous attention to detail to mature our display system architectures and designs.
Optical Systems Engineer Responsibilities
- Develop new concepts and technologies for Wearable Glasses Display and sensor systems
- Cross-functional engagement with internal and external partners to develop concepts and prototypes into realizable product hardware designs
- Define sub-system requirements with the product team, then deliver AR/VR hardware, software, and calibration that meets specifications. This may include: hardware (optics, electronics, mechanics, silicon, sensor, data-communication), software (computer vision algorithms, calibration, modeling, analysis), and performance analysis
- Drive optical system requirements definitions. Flow down optical system requirements to sub-system and component level. Resolve requirements discrepancies at different levels
- Drive design verification, testing, and troubleshooting process to correlate with optical modeling and metrology, and between sub-system performance and system performance
- Support TPMs in evaluation, validation, and delivery to specs by metrology, user studies, safety studies, FMEA analysis, environmental analysis, and dogfooding
- Contribute to the process of design releases, prototyping and creation of RFQ, ERS documentation
Minimum Qualifications
- Masters degree or equivalent experience in the field of Optics, Optical Sciences, Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Sciences or a similar field, or equivalent work experience
- 5+ years of experiences in applied research and/or consumer electronics product development of optics or photonic systems
- 3+ years of hands-on experiences of designing, analyzing, validating complex optical systems requiring any combination of the following: imaging, illumination, physical optics, stray light analysis, radiometry, photometry
- Experience maturing optical systems from proof-of-concept to early low volume prototype or production
- Experiences in optical design and modeling methods and tools for imaging and illumination systems as well as tolerance analysis
- Advanced user of one or more of the optical design and analysis tools, such as Code V, Zemax, FRED, LightTools, or similar
- Demonstrated experience of crafting and delivering clear and concise messages via tiers of communication channels in a large cross-functional setting to drive alignment among competing priorities and through ambiguity
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD in the field of Optical Sciences, Optical Engineering, Physics, Electrical Engineering or a similar field
- Working knowledge of human vision systems and ophthalmic optics, and familiarity with ophthalmic lens standards
- 5+ years of hands-on experiences of designing, analyzing, validating complex optical systems requiring any combination of the following: imaging, illumination, physical optics, stray light analysis, radiometry, photometry
- Knowledge of mass production of optical components and systems
- Experience with full design chain: first order layout, design, material selection, opto-mechanical interaction, tolerancing, thermal control, supplier selection, supplier management, test and manufacturing evaluation
- Experience in opto-mechanical design and analysis tools such as Ansys, Solidworks, NX
