A Day in the Life

In this exciting role as a Sensor R&D Engineer, you will have responsibility for designing and developing patient monitoring consumables for optical physiologic sensing applications. You will contribute across the full product lifecycle, from concept and development through design transfer and sustaining engineering. This includes creating innovative product architectures, prototyping and testing, and developing test methods and tools that ensure product performance and manufacturability. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional partners to deliver clinically meaningful, manufacturable solutions that meet customer needs.

Responsibilities may include the following and other duties may be assigned:

  • Lead and provide guidance in the design and development of patient monitoring consumable prototypes, verification/validation units, and product specifications, including material specifications, assembly drawings, and manufacturing documentation.
  • Execute mechanical design of the sensor, including CAD (SolidWorks) modeling, prototyping, GD&T, and design for manufacturability.
  • Conduct material testing and finite element simulation to evaluate adhesion, durability, and optical performance.
  • Plan and conduct experiments to support proof of concept, verification, validation, and troubleshooting of field or sustaining issues.
  • Define subsystem requirements with traceability to user needs and component specifications.
  • Apply expertise in physiological signal measurement and optics to inform mechanical and material design decisions.
  • Support design transfer to manufacturing and provide ongoing engineering input to sustaining projects and field performance improvements.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelors degree required
  • Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience, or advanced degree with 0 years of relevant experience

Nice to Have

  • Design engineering and CAD (SolidWorks) expertise; ability to apply engineering analysis techniques and tools (Matlab, Minitab, Excel, Ansys, etc.)
  • Degree in Mechanical, Biomedical or Materials Engineering
  • Finite Element Modeling (FEM) experience, including thermal and mechanical modeling of thin materials
  • Experience with tissue and optics or optomechanical systems
  • Experience with thin films, adhesives, and related mechanics (including adhesion and failure modes)
  • Test method development for material properties, reliability, and requirement development
  • Experience designing equipment and data analysis methods to evaluate material performance for patient monitoring consumables
  • Experience with flexible material manufacturing, conversion, and assembly processes
  • Exposure to modular product architecture for manufacturing scalability
  • Familiarity with RoHS, biocompatibility, and regulatory constraints
  • Sustaining engineering experience, including troubleshooting field issues and implementing design changes for released products
  • Ability to work in a team environment both locally and globally with excellent prioritization and organizational skills
  • Familiarity with medical device regulations and standards, including design controls, ISO 13485, ISO 80601-2-61, ISO 80601-2-85. Experience with protocol development, V&V execution, and risk management.

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD): $83,200.00 - $124,800.00 This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP). The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).

The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
